First Second Books is driving me nuts. They keep publishing gorgeous, heart-felt, high quality graphic novels. Comics that I feel compelled to get.

Now they've made me buy Laika, which (if you know anything about the historical Laika) is a Dead Dog Book.

I despise Dead Dog Books. They make me [Cry] !

To make matters worse, Nick Abadzis arranges his story so skillfully, I couldn't help getting emotionally involved...sort of like some of the people who trained Laika. The author did an exhaustive, insane amount of research on the real life models for his fictionalized characters.

He ends the book with real life quote from the one of the researchers that's simultaneously depressing and poignant as anything seen in stories of this nature.

Highly recommended, thought-provoking, but not very cheerful reading.
