OK, so I've been around for a while, and I love you guys dearly...

Well I got the idea about 6 months ago that my anti-social Mom would fit in around here perfectly. So, can you guys help me convince her that Hatrack isn't just for the young, and that "old people" have fun around here too...

Just email her links to threads that are on subjects that you know that she'd find interesting. I can't imagine that it would take more than three or so.

And what do you consider old? I want to know if I should be offended and start throwing rotten eggs at you or something. [Big Grin]

49 is definitely not too old for Hatrack, but it's difficult to get the non-forum inclined to come here - I should know, I have never yet convinced my husband to come. [Smile]

I think you need to reconsider asking your mother to join. Funny how quickly you censor posts when you know family is watching....

Hmmmm. I don't censor posts here or on sakeriver, and my parents read both. (I censor posts here based on appropriate content for the board, but not based on family.)

Do your parents post here? If so, I don't know who they are.

An example:

JT (a teenager) wants to be angsty and complain about the unfairness of his mother's rules.

JT's mom reads and gets offended.

As a self-sufficient woman, Eljay, I imagine this would not be much of an issue for you.

Anyone else see what I mean?

(By the way, that was just a generic example, I don't think you're angsty, JT.)

*grin* Well, yeah. I was responding more to you and Ela than JT. (Your post sounded, to me, like you had family members start posting/lurking here yourself and your posting style changed, and obviously Ela does, although her situation is also quite different from mine.) [Smile]

Well, I'm no teenager. And I don't think there is much I have posted here that would upset/offend my parents or other relatives.

But I'd still kinda rather not have them here. This is my place to get away from real life! [Wink]

Well, I don't exactly censor myself, but I am not exactly anonymous, either, with 2 kids and 2 nephews reading the board. So, whereas some people might share an issue relating to family stuff, I am more discreet than I might otherwise be (though, in general I am fairly discreet anyway). I wouldn't, for example, share an issue about my kids, as some parents here have, because many here know my kids, and I need to have more than the average sensitivity about what I say and what they might read. Even good news I share only with their permission.

I'd like to think I've out grown that... lol...

But yeah, I'm not too concerned about censoring things from my mom, she knows my opinions and luckily since we're both theatre bums, she tends to agree...

theatre bums. Is that like real bums, but you wash it off at the end of the show?

Anyway, JT Stryker, if your mom is reading this, I'm 46 and don't usually feel too old for Hatrack. There are some generation-specific discussions here (I've never seen most of the games that are discussed in gaming threads, for example), but I find that there's enough other content of interest that I'm not having to face my incipient geezerhood too frequently.

I also have to say that I find the level of discussion (in the serious threads) to be high enough that I would have difficulty guessing the age of most of the people posting. There are exceptions. (You know who you are!)

So, it's a good place to visit. Fun for the whole family.

Bob -- we could start an "old people's thread" just for those over 40 -- and fill it with reminiscencing about old stuff we remember from childhood.

...surely that would draw her in... as well as show how many of us here are over 40....

Just show her the posts warning you not to let her visit. Once she learns that she can discover all of your dastardly thoughts and evil deeds, nothing will stop her from visiting.

And once you visit, you are hooked for ever.

Amen. I've tried to get several people I am quite fond of to join. And while they've checked it out and even posted some, no one I've introduced has chosen to become a part of the community. [Frown]

dkw got the rest of the family interested in Hatrack by sending us links to posts when she and Bob_Scopatz were having fun with you all. Paul and I don't post a lot, but do lurk . . . just to see what the "kids" are up to (they post MUCH more frequently than they e-mail). So, how many other families have six registered Hatrackers (actual individual people who post - not counting dogs, lamps, infants, multiple screen names and/or non-humans)?

So - find a thread, send links and watch what happens.

Hatrack is like a big, friendly syringe. You love it. You use it every day. It makes you feel good. You can stop using it anytime you want.

Stryker's mom would fit in here, and it would be cool to get to know her better, she is a very nice and powerful woman.
