I called to cancel my MSN dialup account today. I was one of their original subscribers and my monthly charges had climbed over the years to $6.95/month. I hung onto that account for many years even though I had better high speed access because, on travel, sometimes it was my only way to get to the internet without racking up long distance charges at the hotel. See...MSN always had local dial in numbers.

It was great.

Not fantastic, but it saved me time and again over the years when hotels didn't routinely have high speed connections available.

I realized a few months ago, however, that I haven't used the account in a couple of years and I'm still being charged for it. I went to log on to cancel it and realized that none of my current computers even has the login ID and password recorded in it anymore. So, the last time I used it I had different computers. Wow!

So, I finally just found a number and called them. They were pleasant about it and remarked about how I had one of those "old" accounts...they don't even offer that service anymore.

So...bye bye MSN. Thanks for the memories. I liked you better than AOL and Compuserve.

Oddly enough, my boss recently canceled her pioneering Compuserve account. She was one of the first people to sign up with them and has had the account all these years for the same reason -- it just got charged to a credit card every month so she forgot about it.

So long dialup. I have fond memories, but to say I will miss you is an overstatement.

Dialup is shameful and disgusting. I think the last time I was genuinely insulted was when I was talking on the phone with mom and she said "I tried to call earlier, but it was busy. I guess you were on the computer."

Good point. Not mine. It rolls over to a answering system and then calls me on my cell phone to let me know that I missed a call on my office line.

Cool.

I'm not entirely sure how that happened, either. That was the landline in an apartment shared with 2 others, I had nothing to do with setting it or its options up.
