I can't help it, the ad at the top of the page keeps making me think of this. A friend of mine saw the movie and gave me a synopsis- as she understood it. And I caught snippets from watching the Oscars that year. I guess the idea was that the guy was unable to be silenced. So what do you think, muse or madness? As someone with OCD, I lean toward the madness, but from the glowing speeches at Oscar time it seems the film depicted him as a heroic artist.

It did portray him as heroic at first, but that then became MADDNESS at the end. That's if the SP was the same as the film.

I guess the Oscar speeches were just aimed at saying any request that people not offend is the same as cutting out their tongue.

I saw it. Great movie, but very dark ending. Joaquin Phoenix, Geoffery Rush, Michael Caine, and Kate Winslet are all excellent.

I don't think it depicted him as a hero at all. Geoffery Rush's Marquis was unquestionably mad... but mad over things that are common to us. Sex is a common drive and almost every sexual situation has a dominant and a submissive role to be played. So, to a certain extent, the marquis is right when he says we are all like him. His madness is not that he has these urges and thoughts, but that they control him and compel him.

I must be insane. I found this movie to be quite amusing, definitely vulgar, yet very amusing.

Geoffery Rush is an incredible actor, he makes me hate him in so many movies. I watched his character with complete disgust and total fascination.

You thought the ending was amusing?

From the death of the Marquis through the whole segment where Joaquin Phoenix is driven to the same madness by his dreams of Kate Winslet I was merely and truly horrified. Up till then, yes, the whole thing was amusing, but those elements took all the joy out of the story and left me thinking of it as a nightmare.

I liked the movie. It was a long time ago, though, so I don't really remember details, just scenes and impressions.

I didn't think the ending was amusing in any way. I thought the Marquis was amusing in a sick, dark way.

Ok... we pretty much feel the same way about the movie, then [Smile]
