[Big Grin] Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm James Tiberius Kirk's (a member here) older brother and I've been reading Hatrack almost everyday since December 2001. I first read Ender's Game in my freshman year of high school and I have been a fan of OSC's writings ever since. I'm one responsible for introducing my brother, JTK, to OSC which eventually led him to this site. After four years of procrastination (believe it or not), I have finally mustered up the courage to start posting.

[Angst] waits for painful newbie initiation rituals to begin...

Mmmhmm.....he just wants to use the members here to edit his homework and provide him with endless resources for for his speeches.

Oh. Oops. That's me.

Just kidding! Welcome to Hatrack.

(I was a lurker too. It only took me 1 1/2 years to muster up the courage though.) [Big Grin]

Now here's my question: I seem to recall that one had to meet one (or is it two) Jatraqueros to be real. Does this count? [Big Grin]

Yes, you can become real through recruitment. It's not the PREFERRED way, mind you, but it does work.

Your attendance at various -con events is a more certain way to rise through the pantheon upon Mt. Hatrack.

Hello! Welcome to Hatrack! We used to have a newbie ritual that involved biting. Eating, actually, to be precise. But alas, Slash has left, and nobody eats newbies anymore.

Where are you going to school?

Long-time lurkers always give me the same creepy feeling that hidden surveillance cameras do. Like, I've been going about my normal daily business and suddenly I realize that someone else was watching the whole time.

Hi, rCX! :) Do you have your favorites yet?

Hi, and welcome.

If I recall correctly, the "official" way to become "real" is to meet in real life and face-to-face two other Hatrackers who have previously been made "real". So, knowing your brother only counts for half of that, and then only if he has been previously made real.

I'm "real" because I have met Tom D, his wife Christy, Mac, Ladyday, and several other Hatracker's face-to-face.

(Personally, I think it also depends on "real to whom?" I think if 5 Hatrackers get together, none of them having met any other Hatrackers before, they all become "real" to one another even though they aren't necessarily "real" to the group at large. I'd also argue that if two people of that "real-to-each-other" sub-group become "real" by meeting two "officially real" Hatrackers", the rest of the "real-to-each-other" group would become "real" by association. The whole point of the "real"-ness issue is that there is a chain of real-life witnesses vouching that you do indeed exists outside of cyberspace. [Smile]

I'm not allowed to meet people I met online. I HAVE, however, met OSC. Does he count, or am I stuck until I'm out on my own??

And I never got Initiated! Except at band camp, where they saran-wrapped me to my bed and put shaving cream all over it... and duct-taped and saran-wrapped my door, and put shaving cream on that...
