I usually don't go to Barnes and Noble. I prefer the larger used bookstore in town where you can trade in your old books for credit. But for whatever reason I felt like going...
I found not one, not two, but THREE OSC hardcover books on clearance! For the most part I only own paperback because hardcover is expensive, so when I saw these I flipped! 'Course, I also felt sad. They're such good novels, they shouldn't have been on clearance.

Congrats on your find! But no need to worry about them being on clearance. All hardcovers go on clearance- especially those that are popular or by famous authors. Bookstores would much rather have too many of a good selling book than too few, so they purposely buy too many. If you're willing to wait several months to a year you get any bestseller for a fifth of the price.

I'm odd or picky or something. The main reason I don't like used bookstores is because most of the books are beat up. It's a fair occurence when I find a book in the condition I would like. Whereas most bigger new bookstores (B&N, Borders, etc.) I can usually find books is awesome condition (since they are new) and then I can keep them that way.
I'm with you all the way on finding hardcover books for cheap. I don't like buying hardcover since they are so expensive, so the only time I get them is when they are cheap. If they are cheap, I buy them up (since they stay in better condition with less care). I got both Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets in hardcover for $7 each during the summer. That was quite awesome.

We have this amazing used bookstore where I live that's bigger than any of the other bookstores. And while some of their books are *slightly* beat up, a lot of times you can get books that are in decent condition. They don't seem to accept books that are in bad condition, and that's why I just love going there. Plus I get tons of credit, since I love to read. ^_^

Ah. Most of the used bookstores I've been in are Half Price Books. There the quality varies. Sometimes you'll find a book in awesome condition. Most times though, the books have some flaws. One of the hardcovers I bought there had the glue dissolved in the first half of the spine, so that the book would sort of partially fall apart if held a certain way. Stuff like that bothers me. Oh well. I don't buy tons of books, so I can afford to be picky when I do.

I figure that as long as all the pages are there and the ink is readable, it doesn't matter if the cover on a used book is beat up. I'm not buying the books as investments, I'm buying them to read them.

I don't consider my books investments. I just like my stuff to look nice. Same thing with my magazines. I hate when people borrow them and rip some of the pages. Then they just aren't as nice.

Leah's Guide to Picking Up Women at Bookstores:
1. Approach browsing or reading woman
2. Engage in conversation, preferably about books (at first, anyway)
3. If browsing/reading woman drops hints that she's there to browse or read, pick up on them and go away.
4. If no hints are dropped, proceed wooing activities in much the same way as any other venue (bear in mind that, unless this is some sort of special bookstore/bar/rock concert combination, the volume of whatever hokey lines are dropped should be considerably less, and alcohol should NOT be guest #3.)
5. A true gentleman might buy his lady a book. A cheap mass market paperback wouldn't be out of the question...

I haunt used bookstores only when I'm looking for books that are out of print for the same reason pfresh85 mentioned...used bookstores have books in pretty bad condition sometimes. So I usually buy new from Borders or B&N.
Books are my biggest vice, so I do buy hardcovers at full price. I try to limit it to "trusted" authors, though, because nothing's worse than pricy hardcovers that suck.
(Here's a question for you...If you're a fast reader, and don't damage your books, is it ok to return the book the next day if it sucked and is still in good condition? I've never done it but I've been tempted the few times I've gone wrong and bought a hardcover book that was bad.)

Eh, just leave the workers alone. I used to work at B&N and people flirted with all the female employees CONSTANTLY. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that we had to dress nicely for that job. They ranged from truly flattering, I still have one guy's business card it was such a nice memory, to embarrasing for them, a guy VERY akwardly asked me to a concert while looking for a book about how to make friends, to embarassing for me- once a man is known to be buying a playboy he seems to lose all shame. Man, I could never buy a Playboy. I'm embarrassed enough when I buy an issue of Wizard (and that's just a comic book magazine).
