This is the AID a middle eastern country is sending us according to CNN:

Qatar has offered the United States $100 million to assist in the humanitarian crisis triggered by Hurricane Katrina.
/news

Oh Jeez Oh Man
Thats about 90 millions dollars more than the most aid from any other country (AUS 10 mill).

Why can't I be the leader of some rich country made out of oil in the middle of the desert???

As long as you're wishing, why not wish for something truly amazing-- like,

"Why can't I be the leader of some rich, utopian society that exports love and peace throughout the whole world?"

CNN reported that Hugo Chavez, "offered to send cheap fuel, humanitarian aid and relief workers to the disaster area."

Considering the recent Robertson controversy, I find that more impressive than Qatar's offer.

On the other hand, I'd never heard of Qatar until this thread, even though it apparently has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.

Welcome, Celaeno!

I've heard of Qatar, knew they were filthy rich, and, yeah, that's it. [Smile]

But yeah, that's it. [Big Grin]

I was impressed that Castro offered doctors and medical supplies.

Not, of course, that we would accept his offer, because we routinely send people on medical missions to Cuba because they don't have enough doctors or medical supplies. But I thought it was awfully decent of someone who we pretty much know hates us to offer help instead of just pointing and laughing. Even if it is probably just to impress his citizens.

Yes. They still don't have enough doctors or medical supplies, though. At least, not according to doctors and medical personnel here.

But my mom went to the Dominican Republic on a medical mission two years after she went to Cuba, and she agreed that Cuba is miles ahead of the DR when it comes to quality and availability of medical treatment.

And, you know, everything else. Like food and clean water and clothing.

For a country that used to be number three in this hemisphere in standard of living, still being ahead of the Dominican Republic and Jamaica is not a lot to be proud of.

Castro also offered to send election supervisors back in 2000 and again in 2004, since we were having such difficulties getting an honest count.

I interpret this move as much of the same.
