I mentioned something in another thread about how I'm seriously going to be in a band. I'm supposed to play the bass guitar. Unfortunately, I don't own a bass and don't know how to play it. I was wondering if perhaps there is an online resource for me to refer to in my self teaching.
I'll go into more detail about the band. It consists of me and three of my friends. We've decided that we are going to release our first album under the name The Migranes. The first album will be really good. And then, for no apparent reason, we'll break up for 6 months.
Then we will reunite as the Kidney Stones. We are going to release a rock opera about someone who has Kidney Stones, and the last song will be called The Passing. You know, of the kidney stones? Ha, ha.
Then we plan to break up again, and reunite 2 years later under an unspecified name. That is when we will pump out album after album.

Right...Anyways, if you're serious about learning bass, I reccommend you head into a local music shop, pick up this book, and study. I used that book when I first started learning bass and it was great. I had my friend (who's now pretty much earning a college scholarship in music for the way he plays bass) go over it with me and I learned alot. I really suggest you find a teacher, though. Alot could be self-taught, but there's alot that you could learn from an experienced bassist. I've been studying bass for the past couple of years with my band teacher, who's a brilliant musician and an excellent teacher, and I still have alot to learn.

Maybe I'll say something to the band director at my school, though I don't think he'd be happy with me for wanting to learn bass rather than practicing my concert band instrument.

I don't see why he would...While most musicians do specialize in one instrument, they should all know at least the basics of the other instruments in their band. My band teacher plays about 7 instruments incredibly. Like, beyond incredible . Learning multiple instruments really teaches you alot more about music than you would in just specializing in one. If I were your teacher, I would be happy if my student wanted to learn more instruments. As long as you're not just giving up on your current one because you got bored What do you play now?

My band director hardly knows how to put MY instrument, the trombone, together. And, since its marching season, I found out he doesn't know how to put a lyre, a thing that holds music while you march, on it either.

I just got a harmonica. No assembly required. And it came with a little slip of paper "How to play your harmonica"
Since I can't seem to follow the instructions well enough to play the song that comes with the instructions ("When the Saints Come Marchin' In"), I've just been jamming with it.
My son has told me that it is unpleasant to be in the room with me while I'm jamming on my harmonica.
I think I need more practice.

Harmonica is fun. I can play "You Are My Sunshine", "Oh, Susanna!", and "Gentle Annie". I also sometimes play blues riffs (but not if there's someone better around!)
