One easy way is to add yourself to your buddy list, then invite yourself to chat, and when the chat invitation dialoge box pops up, replace the long random chatroom number with "Hatrack Chat".
(The way you invite yourself to chat is to right click on your buddy name in your buddy list, and pick "Send Chat Invitation" off the menu.)

If installing aim doesn't work, you can also try AIM express , which is a java version that doesn't require installation. You'll still need to register an user name if you haven't already, though.

I recommend Gaim. Not that AOL actually does read your IMs, but they do bundle a lot of spyware and other junk I don't want with AIM.

I am NOT going to have anything to do with AOL. So you'll just have to deal with it [joyously / miserably / rapturously / ecstaticly / sadly].

I just hopped on hatrackchat on AIM right now and no one was there =/ There never seems to be anyone there when I look. I'm wondering if Trillian doesn't handle the room right or something.

Someone invite Architraz Warden if they can... I want to see if AIM Express will let me into the chat (the invite isn't working on my end).

I did use Winamp for a while. But no, not now. I'm going between media players.
Also, Winamp is not as directly controlled by AOL as AIM is, kinda-like Netscape. AOL don't give a damn. But then, PartitionMagic is now 25% Microsoft.
