Just got back from the “Serenity” midnight showing. Let’s see….. a spoiler free review.
OK.

It was great. It ties up a lot of loose ends that the show had left and answered questions that you might have had. Lots more action then you usually get in the show and more special effects of course. All in all a great movie.

I was wondering about when it looked like everyone was literally going to die. They had already killed off a couple of them and I thought wait…. Isn’t there supposed to be a sequel. I’ll leave it at that. Ha. Not even a bad spoiler since I didn’t say who. Two though and I was highly disappointed in both.

Yeah, I thought they were gonna go all "Blake's 7" on us. I was just utterly in shock with both of them. My jaw was open for about five minutes.

Absolutely fantastic movie. I loved how the characters were subtly different from their TV incarnations.

Although Kayley looks better with her extra weight on the TV show. She's way too thin in the movie.

Now I know why people had reservations about the movie. I was under the impression that the movie was just lukewarm, that it simply wasn't as good as the show. Now I understand...it was amazing, but absolutely wrenching. Once I saw Haven destroyed, I wasn't shocked when Book died, though I was sort of expecting Simon to come save him. The cast is signed on for a trilogy and all. I thought going in that everyone would survive. But then he died, and I was sad, but not heartbroken. And then, "I am a leaf on the--" BAM! NOOOOO! Not Wash! It was a complete shock. I think my mouth was hanging open for about five minutes after that. He was there one second, and then he was gone. Poor Zoe. I still see that scene in my head, over and over. I'm angry, and I'm glad, because I was truly scared for the rest of the crew. I seriously thought that they were all going to die. I thought we had been lied to about the sequels, that the Firefly story was going to end here.

Great moments: "I swallowed a bug," "Dear Buddha, I would like a pony," "Nothin' twixt my nethers that don't run on batteries," "Screw this! I'm gonna live," (the audience applauded at that one) River fighting the Reavers, "We might experience some slight turbulence and then explode," finding out where the Reavers came from...

Couple of thoughts:

Did Mal seem like a lot more of a jerk at the beginning of the movie than usual?

Why did they show Simon rescuing River? I was under the impression that she was smuggled out by other people, and the first time he saw her was when Mal opened the box on Serenity.

Anyone think that, given the conversation during Heart of Gold, Zoe might well be pregnant right now?

I'd love to see what River's life will be like now that she seems to have snapped out of the insanity.

Will there be a new war, with the Alliance weakened by the broadcast the crew sent out?

Will we ever find out who the heck Book was before he was a shepherd?

The villain for this movie was awesome!

Chris, if you're reading this, I'll take one of these and one of these. I think that sums up my feelings pretty well. I loved the movie, but I feel a little weird now telling people they should go see it.

As to the question of if, during the series, Simon had not seen River prior to the opening of the box on Serenity - I don't think it was ever established. Certainly I'd never drawn that conclusion.

Apart from that, I'm in total agreement with you!

Yeah, I noticed the dinosaurs. Also, did the Reaver ship that was near Serenity (I think Serenity actually fired on it) look like Jubal Early's ship to anyone else? Ooh, a Reaverfied Jubal Early. Scary.

Simon rescuing River threw me for a loop when I saw it, as it was pretty clearly stated he hadn't seen her until the box was opened. I accepted it as a necessary change to simplify things for the new viewer, but it threw a lot of the show's events askew for me. If Simon knew his sister was comabt-trained, as apparently he did, some of his actions in "Firefly" seem off.

I believe Mal was meaner in this movie. It's mentioned that they've had a hard few months, and Inara's gone.

Question for those who have seen the movie--does anything happen between Mal and Inara, or between Kaylee and Simon? Anything? At all? One chaste kiss on the cheek would make me happy.

I caught a sneak preview on the 27th. [Big Grin]

I think Book was once the same profession as the Alliance "Incident Management Specialist."

Not Wash! War stories is one of my favorite episodes.

Indeed Whedon does a spectacular job, he makes you think they're all gonna die!

Simons a lucky #%^!@# grr.

Mal and Inara have something going, but no contact. They play it up.
Kaylee and Simon get together in the end. Very funny.
