I have two purposes in posting this thread. First, to share some relatively obscure music that I've been enjoying with everyone else. Second, to see if anybody can make recommendations for similar groups that I might not have discovered yet. All of these artists have free mp3 downloads on their sites, so you can get a listen. I'll list a track or two that's a good sample of each's style, if you don't want to listen to all they have up. Several of the songs do have swearing, though, so consider a language warning these links:

MC Frontalot - Master of pretending to be hardcore. Raps about his own obscurity, ripping off other people's rhythms, Penny Arcade, and assorted nerdiness. Recommended tracks: "Which MC was that?" and "Indier Than Thou"

MC Hawking - You probably didn't know that Stephen Hawking was as into gangsta rap as he is physics. You have to listen to this to believe it. The same voice-synth program as the real Hawking, except put to rhyming instead. Recommended tracks: "E=MC Hawking" and "Entropy"

MC Chris - As far as obscure nerdy rappers go, MC Chris is almost mainstream. You may have heard him on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021. High pitched and fast rapping to contrast your typical bass boomers. Unfortunately not many songs for download, but he raps about BOBA FETT, people! Recommended Track's "Fett's Vette" and "The Tussin"

So I hope you enjoy some of these. Anybody know any other good rappers that a middleclass nerd who has never lived in tha 'hood can identify with?

Good suggestions Enigmatic, I haven't heard of Frontalot before.

Also look up MF Doom who has some connection to adult swim much like MC Chris.

Thoughtful rap: Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Slug, Deltron (deltron falls into the 'nerd rappers' genre as well)

jazz/hiphop: digable planets, any artists affiliated with Ninja Tunes

misc: Roots Manuva (reggae/rap), Cibo Matto, the Beastie Boys
