This story seems to have gotten swept under the rug. Hope this isn’t a sign of things to come, but I’m very fearful it is and that most likely this guy’s package blew before he got to his intended target.

I'm not sure how it was swept under the rug. It was all over the news stations here in Dallas after it happened. Maybe it's just because we are somewhat close to Norman?

I guess that’s good to know. It seems to not be making much in the major media. I guess there’s been so much with the Supreme Court and other things that it certainly seems to not be out there.
But regardless of the amount of coverage, any opinions about this?

From what I've heard, it's unrelated to terrorism, and the guy who did it was known for having mental problems or something. Still not a good thing, and I'm just glad no one was hurt.

There's a Hatracker that knew him slightly. It was definitely not terrorism; I don't think anything's being covered up. It's just a sad story without any sexy angle to it.

Why is it definitely not terrorism? Just because he didn’t get to kill anyone else? With everything they found in his apartment it certainly seem like he had bigger plans. Looks more like we were lucky he was a dumb terrorist.

Well the last time I saw news about it was on Sunday. Maybe there have been more developments since then. I haven't been paying as much attention as maybe I should have.

Baloney. Jay, the "northeast news network" is the source propagating the Jihadist B.S. and they are paranoid crackpots as looney as the people they are accusing. You may be conservative but you aren't *that* looney.
Joel knew mutual friends of mine at the University of Oklahoma. I would have recognized him, and ate lunch in a group of mutual friends with him in the student union several times at least. However I don't believe I had much more conversation with him other than "what's your major". Joel was a freshman, I was a grad student, other than occasionally at the lunch table I didn't interact with him.
While conservative, in person at the time, he certianly didn't come across even as vehemently as Jay does on this forum.
"the list of terrorist ties" turns out to be his list of fraternity brothers. Many of whom are my friends, and were surprised when the FBI showed up at their doorstep. Some of them also probably have higher security clearances than the FBI personel interviewing them.
Joel had walled himself off from them in many ways, and was battling depression. Clearly he wasn't entirely rational. However he was a science geek and I know science geeks on this forum who have actually done more damage via explosives than this caused, albeit without fatalities.
I also know that Joel was smart enough, that if he truly wanted to blow up someone besides himself, he would have succeded. That no one else was killed, says to me that even if he had contemplated it or been influenced to try to do so, in the end, he chose to end his own life rather than harm others.
