Well, here's the deal. I was possibly going to graduate in May, but after having to change schools for a semester and all that, it looks like I'm going to take at least another semester, if not another year.
Not that that's a big deal; I was going to have finished in three years, anyway.
So I'm thinking, while I'm hanging around to take the random required class here and there to finish my undergraduate degree, maybe I should look into taking a second minor.
I already have one (Music Industry Studies, a.k.a. Music Business) that I'm finished with entirely. I'd really like to minor in psychology, but I'm not sure if I'd have time.
How many classes/credit hours are generally required for a minor? I didn't understand the way the requirements were worded on my school's website to begin with, and said website has now (it seems) deteriorated into emergency bulletins. I realize it probably differs from school to school, but I was wondering what the ranges in credit hour requirements are.
Maybe I should do philosophy instead. I definitely have to take four philosophy classes already, and I'm on the third right now. Hmmm.

we don't do minors here, so I couldn't tell you. But I know that for a concentration in something, it depends on the major.

I'm really, really bad with languages. Although I bet I'll have to take one for grad school.
If I took one, it'd probably be Spanish.
But I definitely wouldn't have time for six Spanish classes, since those have to be taken in order. That's three full years, or two years plus two summer school semesters. I have three semesters left, max, plus two possible summer school semesters. So I'd be a class shy.
Do you want a fun minor or a practical minor? For a practical minor, you could do accounting or technical writing or graphic design.

What are you planning on going to grad school for?
If I were you, I'd either take a minor in a subject I thought was cool, or one that could help me in the future for either continuing education or employment.
Useful ones for pretty much any subject would include computer programming or a foreign language. A lot of humanities grad programs want to see reading fluency in one or two languages.
Useful "life skills" ones would include psychology, philosophy, or economics.
I think an art or music minor could be very fun.

As far as I know, each department sets their own requirements for their minors. Some are a lot more involved than others (and just taking classes from that department may not mean a whole lot, they usually have a set of classes you're required to take for the minor). You should be able to call the philosophy department and have them tell you what they require for a minor. Then you can make your decision about whether to get a philosophy minor or not.

I'm a marketing major right now. I'll be going to get my MBA in either marketing or management.
And I might get a law degree while I'm at it. Crap, I definitely need language for that, don't I?
I already have one minor that would be useful in the particular industry I'm interested in. But I'm wondering if maybe another business minor wouldn't be a bad idea. Except that I'm probably already pretty close to the philosophy minor.
At the same time, I'm not so hell-bent on working in the music industry that I'd absolutely refuse a job doing something else, if it seemed interesting. I'm a business nerd.
And I can't call my school yet to ask about it because there's no one there. All they have is an administrative office set up in Texas to pay the staff. I'm going to try to get ahold of my advisor's phone number somehow to ask him, if phone lines are working.

I've actually contemplated picking up a minor myself. I considered a math minor since I miss taking math classes.

Yeah, the minors at UAB are also 18 hours, minimum. My major is one of a few that actually requires a minor in order to graduate so I had to pick one. It was a hard choice, but I finally settled on Professional Writing. It's advanced composition, professional editing, business writing, etc.

If you're looking at an MBA or Law degree, and considering working in the music businness, I'd say that you should consider
philosophy - teaches you to critically think and write, and business ethics are always important
computer science - useful and important in almost any business field
math - a good, solid subject that again teaches good thinking and problem-solving skills (and Operations Research is very useful for business, and fun)

Along the lines of what Belle said, what about a theatre minor? Acting/audition techniques would be useful for future business presentations and/or lawyerly things like trials - audience manipulation, hello? And the various theatre tech areas (sound, lighting, etc) all can come in handy as Life Skillz.

Yeah, they teach all subjects, but in the program I'm in, you have to have 18 hours in a specific subject, the choices include a student and parent relations, different languages, and all the normal subjects (but they used to have a fine arts consentration, it's gone now, that's what I actually wanted).

I'd say go for the philosophy minor. You've already got some hours so you wouldn't have to risk staying longer because you're shy the last hours of this extra minor.
I'm getting a philosophy minor to fulfill the requirements for a minor in my English/Liberal Arts degree. I'm constantly complimented for choosing that as my minor because having a background in philosophy shows that you're a person capable of critical and independent thought.
Besides, if you're interested in psychology, they have some crossover, especially in modern studies. I took a class on CG Jung which satisfied requirements for both philosophy and psychology students.

In order to get a history minor or a poli sci minor at Purdue you just have to take 4 classes over 300 level. I'll probably get a history minor just from fulfilling my gen ed requirement.

I had only one major but three minors. biology and chemistry minors required 18 hours over and above the introductory series, so they were a serious amount of work. And fun!

The little reservation town where I grew up (and learned to read) had a prominant posting in the general store "We do not sell beer to Minors." As a new reader that always puzzeled me. There was no one in town but Indians, Mormons and folks who worked in the mines. The Tribe forbad sale to Indians, the Mormons shouldn't have been buying it. So, why stock the stuff?

Here are the "concentration areas" I have to choose from for Elementary education, I'm pretty much leaning to the italicized ones. You pretty much have to have 15 hours for all of them

It looks like I need 6 classes for a philosophy minor. I'm on class 3 now, and I definitely still need to take Business Ethics, which is also a philosophy class.
I also found out that it's a lot easier to double-major in Chicago than it is in New Orleans. I wanna!
And breyerchic, I think you should look into psychology stuff. But I find that kind of thing ridiculously interesting.
