Musical version of The Princess Bride in planning.

quote:
Composer Adam Guettel and screenwriter William Goldman will collaborate on a musical version or the hit fairy tale film "The Princess Bride," the New York Post reported.

The 1987 Rob Reiner-directed, Goldman-penned movie fits the teasing description Guettel gave for his next project, while speaking backstage at the 2005 Tony Awards. While hesitant to specifically name his next musical due to "legal reasons," he did say it would have a "fairy tale" nature and would involve "a lot of swordfighting."

"The Princess Bride" delighted audiences with its mix of sincere medieval magic and mocking parody of the swashbuckling film genre. The flick starred Cary Elwes and Robin Wright as each other's true love, and Chris Sarandon as the evil prince who would keep them apart. The film also starred Mandy Patinkin as a swordsman out for vengeance, Christopher Guest as another baddie, Wallace Shawn and Andre the Giant as two unlikely compatriots, and Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as an ancient wizard and his wife.

It would be weird to have anyone but the original actors, to me. I love that movie so much and don't want to see anyone else trying to be my "Farm Boy" or "Buttercup". [Smile]
Pretty good movie to do a musical of though.
I can't wait to hear the "Inconceivable" song or the "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father: prepare to die. " song.

Apparently, Mandy Patinkin has a great singing voice. And Guest can sing, at least a little.

Oh yeah, you could totally drag Patinkin in (his voice is actually quite classical, he's been huge in Sondheim productions and won the Tony for "Sunday in the Park with George." I adored him in "The Secret Garden" myself.)

I'm sure Guest could do it too, though I imagine they'll get all new actors and actresses for the musical. The movie did come out almost 20 years ago you know. New blood and everything.

well, you can't have anybody but Wallace Shawn say "inconceivable!"

No one else could duplicate that delivery... not even Nathan Lane (who wouldn't be a bad choice for Miracle Max, however)

And no Andre. [Frown]

A background song for each of the kidnap plotters would be great fun, though.

Heh, Andre's son is still alive, I believe, although he doesn't have the unique vocal signature of Andre.

I could almost see Nathan Lane as Miracle Max... almost. Billy Crystal truly was inspired casting there. And Carol Kane is currently touring with Wicked - she was awesome as Madame Morrible when I saw it!

Wow, I didn't know she was touring with Wicked! What a perfect role for her! [Smile]

Yeah, we'd have to get Wallace Shawn back, wouldn't we?
