Takes all kinds, I guess.

The thing in that column that really interested me was the part about the geniuses on that school board in Virginia who wouldn't let a high school marching band play "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" because a) it promotes the devil and, b) playing it at a school-sponsored event violates the separation of church and state.

First of all, if I understand Charlie Daniels' world view at all, he wouldn't be going around singing songs that promote the devil. Second of all, I doubt they would accept the separation of church and state argument if someone protested the band playing the national anthem at football games because the last verse contains the line "Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation". Sure, no one ever sings the last verse. But I doubt anyone was going to be singing the words to the Daniels' song over the loudspeakers while the band played, either.

Sheesh.

I'm gonna start a tribute band to myself.

I will bang on a pot with a spoon and yodel.

Who shall join me?

quote:
folks got into a pier-six brawl over whether or not a high school marching band should be allowed to play Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The Hylton High band was forced to remove the tune from its repertoire after a local newspaper feverishly opined that playing it not only promoted the cause of the Man Downstairs, but violated separation of church and state in its endorsement of things Beelzebubbian. Despite the fact that Daniels attempted to come to the rescue by pointing out that the song paints Satan as a loser (and a lousy musician, to boot), the school board refused to alter course -- which was no doubt a relief to the kid who'd have had to replicate that fiddle solo on tuba while marching around in a silly hat . . .

I just thought this was a great quote. [Smile]

I find it a bit eye-popping that they would ban the song on the premise that it endorsed things Beelzebub and 'promoted the cause of the Man Downstairs.' I'm sure the Man Downstairs has corrupted a good many righteous souls with that piece of music. [Roll Eyes]
