I've never wooted personally, but a number of my co-workers seem to be adicted to it.

There has been much nashing of teeth at missed opportunities to buy a Bag of Crap.

Heh, that's a site I've been passing around too.

Bag o' Crap was a such a good idea.

Haven't purchased anything yet, mostly because I didn't need speakers or a robot.

I'm not in the market for random stuff, but I enjoy woot's FAQ immensely.

quote:
If you buy something you don’t end up liking or you have what marketing people call “buyers remorse,” sell it on ebay. It’s likely you’ll make money doing this and save everyone a hassle. If the item doesn't work, find out what your doing wrong. Yes, we know you think the item is bad, but it’s probably your fault.
I'm a sucker for good ol' fashioned honesty.

Caveat emptor, Mofos.

My office was hoping to get a couple of those remote controlled flying saucers, for barnstorming each others cubicles and whatnot, but they were sold out by the time we tried to get them.

I think the term "woot" is a combination of "woohoo" and "loot." So people playing some game, upon encountering items (I seem to recall it being one of the quake games, though I may be mistaken) would say "woot!" instead of "woohoo! loot!" in order to save time. Hope that helped, Boris.

Today's woot is a robo-lawnmower. From the description:

quote:
(If the Robmower RL500 rises up against you or any member of your puny human community in less than 90 days, subdue it and return it—it’s still under warranty.)
I still have not bought anything from these people, but I like seeing what it is and reading the descriptions sometimes. [Smile] How did the t-rexes work out for ya, Noem?

Cute lawnmower. I'm almost tempted, but I use a reel one, and it's a much better workout than this would be. [Smile] Besides, that's motorcycle money. No frivolous purchases for me!

Actually, the T-Rex was a disappointment. It utterly terrified my cat, and utterly bored me. I had fun removing the skin and taking the thing apart though.

I seriously considered the robomower the last time they had it available (lately it seems like Woot has been having a lot of repeat items, for some reason), but my house sits on the top of a really steep artificial berm, and I'd be surprised if the mower could make it up the hill (or down the hill, at least in anything resembling a controlled fashion).

ElJay, how do you like the reel mower? My yard is pretty small, and there isn't room for a garden shed, so I have no place to store a motorized push mower. I could just stick a reel mower in my basement or something, so I've been tempted to get one. Everyone I know who has had one, though, has warned me away from them, saying that they're an enormous amount of work, and don't do that good a job.

They do a great job as long as you mow regularly. If you let the grass get too long, you have to crosscut it, and if you let it really get to long you have to cut it, wait a day, and cut it again, because some of the grass just gets pushed over and you have to wait for it to spring back upright. Not that I've ever done that or anything.

I love it. It's a good workout, it's non-polluting, and since it doesn't make noise I can mow whenever I darn well please. In high summer I've come home after an evening out and still been too jittery to settle down for the night, and gone out and mowed the lawn at 11:00 at night.

That said, my lawn is pretty small and pretty flat. Pushing uphill wouldn't be much fun.

Oh, and when I mow every week, or twice a week when it's really growing, (I have excellent soil in my yard) it's actually faster with the reel mower than it was with the gas mower, 'cause I can push it as fast as I want and if anything it cuts better going faster. I get bored walking behind a powered mower. [Smile]

Added: As far as an "enormous amount of work," are your friends really lazy or really out of shape? 'Cause it ain't that big a deal.

I used to have to mow the lawn with one of those. And we had a liquid amber tree. And I'm allergic to grass. [Mad] I hated it. I passed it off to my brother, citing my hives, as soon as I figured out the grass allergy. [Laugh]

Woot seems to have added an audio feature to their site. You can click on a little button for an audio descripiton of the product for sale that day, followed by a little song about it (or inspired by it). Today's song is distinctly TMBGish, and is firmly lodged in my brain.

The mp3 player I got from them was a big steaming bucket of crap, but the wireless home/car audio streaming thingie works pretty good.

I know xnera! I had to consle myself with reading the funny description and listening to the song. I have never successfully purchased a Bag 'O Crap.

Did you see the picture they've got posted of somebody's kid dressed as a Bag 'O Crap for Halloween?

You know, the mere existence of Woot probably makes a statement about the impulsive and irresponsible nature of modern consumerism culture.

That statement is likely "I want one!"
