What do you think of when you hear about Apocalypse? Help me think here. I have an assignment for my Typography class in which we have to design four mail stamps using type and graphics. I'm done with War, and I'm working on Pestilence. I'm using all my skills on Adobe Bridge and Google to find images that portray my theme, any suggestions or images that you guys have may be very useful in making me think and be creative with the material I receive from you guys. As always, I'm not asking for you guys to do my hmk, I'm just asking for help in finding materials to do it. My main task is designing the stamps and that is what I am doing. Please help me turn on the light in my head.

Have you considered looking at the original description in the Bible? "And behold, I saw a white horse", and so on. Considerable power in that imagery.

Splendid! For Famine, perhaps you could go with some of those images of starving POWs from WWII? Or more recent famine victims in Africa, if you prefer.

Africa would get the point across more effectively me thinks, but looking at those images makes me cry. I'll just have to bite the bullet for picking such a morbid theme, I guess.

Help me please! I'm having a hard time with death! I don't want to go into Rotten.com for pictures of dead people and such!

My thoughts turn to those old dancing skeletons that were so popular during the Black Death. With maybe a tasteful banner reading "Memento mori". How big are these stamps?

Mexican Day of the Dead imagery might be fun, as well. On a good day, Death wears a sombrero.

EDIT: For some reason I cannot access the site, maybe because I'm at my school's computer and not my lappy? Can anyone access the main site, http://www.etemenanki.info ?

It redirects me to: http://www.etemenanki.info/angel/ but then there's almost nothing on the front page except for a couple of link in the bottom right hand corner. Uh, most of them don't work either. And the "apocalypse" page shows up with "404 Error" in very nice fonts.

I get the 404 Error with this directive: "You entered a wrong URL or that page no longer exists. There's also the possibility that Altariel of Dorthonion ate it. You can go back to Etemenanki or you can drop and die. "

Oh, the 404 error wasn't the Pestilence or Death one?
(Chickens==modern mania for bird flu. We could replace with a picture of Viagra. That is America's Pestilence)

Oh Corwin, you have to click on the graphic at the bottom right in order to access the site. I'll fix the images now. Thanks.

I'm noticing that its telling me that the pictures are corrupt...that's odd. I printed them out of a friend's printer yesterday and he didn't get any error messeges when he tried to print them from the site. I'll look into it when I get home around two hours from now.

I like them a lot, but they'd all be a lot better if you significantly toned down your use of drop shadow (for instance using local, feathered lightness/tone alteration beneath the letters instead to make the letters stand out).

Whoa, Fugu! How could you view the images? I just got home on my Lappy where they were created and uploaded and I still cannot see them! I'll reupload them and maybe they'll work now.

Death works. I re-optimized it in PS CS2 and it did the trick. I'll be working on the others and I'll post when I'm done uploading.

I bet some utter bastard of an atheist would be up in arms about the crosses on them, though. OMG state-supported Christianity!
For myself, I rather like the association of the biggest religious symbol around with the saddest fact of life. Makes you think, eh?

Oh, I didn't do it because of the crosses. It's a graveyard. And I'm not in state university which I think was implied; I attend a private art college.

I meant, if these were really to be used as stamps, then the motif would evidently have state sanction. And I don't see where the crosses being from a graveyard is relevant : they are the main religious symbol of a large, even dominant sect; therefore they do not belong on a government publication. Or so my hypothetical atheist would argue.

I think this idea is just too cool! I want to see real stamps made like that! Why are stamps always so happy, anyway? Why can't we acknowledge that darker side of existence in a stamp sometimes?
For pestilence I totally would have done bird flu, of course, but I like your images. I would have had all the concepts relate to things in the future. It's scarier that way.

Mel, KOM always reminds me of the story about the devotee of Krishna who was such an atheist. He was shocked when he landed in heaven (okay Vrndavana, I think it was called) with Krishna after he died. But Krishna explained that he (the atheist) was there because he thought about Krshna constantly since he was denying his existence with such vehemence all the time. To be so against a thing is the same as to worship it, because you give it such a central position in your life and thoughts. So maybe KOM will be there to greet us when we arrive. :-P
