INterestingly enough, the word "woodchuck" is an anglicized adaption of the Cree word "wuchuk" or "otchock". People decided that "wu" was kind of close to "wood" and decided to change it.
So woodchucks actually chuck "wu" or "ot" and have nothing to do with wood at all.
Another early word was 'wejack', which just shows the European obsession with trying to adapt words.
quote: adaption of the Cree word "wuchuk" or "otchock"
Which makes us believe, of course, that the WUSHOCK is actually also derived from some obscure Cree word originally.

If a groundhog is a wuchuk or a otchock not a woodchuck And it grabs some logs and flings them with a mighty force of luck And a hound dog hogs some ground round with a collar on its back Then it's certain we are flirtin' with the crowd here at Hatrack!
