Okay, I just watched the new episode of Monk. If you've taped it and won't be watching it until later, or if it hasn't yet aired in your timezone be forewarned--thar be Spoilers ahead! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Okay, that done, I think I must have missed something--why were the guards searching everybody at the science museum? I had the impression that he's swapped out the moon rock with the fake without detection, so what's the deal? What am I missing/misunderstanding/whatever?

So do they search all the employees every night, or did this guy have the bad luck to try stealing it on the night they decided to institute the search policy?
Also, if that rock is worth untold millions why don't they have better security for it?

On second thought, the miracle of life is sort of contained within the list:
germs(obviously, lots of germ capability in childbirth) needles(those dang blood tests) milk(breasts tend to drip with it) death(orgasm referred to as "little death" by Shakespeare) snakes(I hope this one is obvious) mushrooms(you know, sort of like the end of the snake) heights(of ecstasy) crowds(that chaotic race of sperm to fertilize the egg) elevators(going up? then coming back down)

Elizabeth, I'm completely with you there. I liked the character well enough, but I'm not sorry to see the accent go at all. And I like Natalie. However, if they set it up for a romance between them, I'm gonna get upset. For me, at least, Trudy is a big part of the show despite the fact that she's not actually a character.

But I'm a little concerned about the "mystery" part of the show. Tom Davidson commented on this awhile ago. I had the "mystery" pretty much figured out a little over halfway through the show.
They've got to do better. Monk can't just be cute and odd. This has to be a show that when he smiles and says "I know what happened," we don't know what he's going to say.

yeah, I had that one figured out pretty quickly too. And I agree, I like for the mysteries to be something that really surprises me at the end.

I agree that a romance between the two would be wrong, but I love to see him go on dates.
As for the mystery, I miss a ton of shows, and tend to ignore that part of the series. It is more a stand-alone for me. I realized when the 24 hour marathon was on that I had missed most of last year's episodes.
For some reason, I really like the hokey aspect of the show.

See, hokey doesn't appeal to me. Wacky people living their wacky lives and being smart-asses to each other? I can get that at home.
Wacky people solving mysteries in a brilliant way before I do, even though all the necessary information's been shown to the viewer? That's impressive.
I would like Monk to start impressing me again, and concentrate less on the guest stars and the cute spit-takes.
I mean, you know it's gotten lazy when Christy and I looked at each other and said, almost simultaneously, that we found it almost impossible for Monk not to have considered the rocks in the fish tank when performing his analysis. Even if he hadn't figured out the whole moon rock angle, he'd've sifted through the rest of the rocks looking for diamonds or something.

I really was sort of bothered by the miracle of life being pegged as a top-of-the-list phobia. If they are trying to get nerds to watch this show, then they better realize that we will remember, if not the exact order, the fact that this alleged phobia was not mentioned previously.

Which means that we need a whole society of Monk apologists out there, like they have for Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek.
So if the miracle of birth wasn't at the top of his list, what happened to put it there -- or was he lying about the order, and if so, why?

Well, if you read my post above, you could argue that the miracle of birth phobia was contained within the top phobias.
Or, did the loss of Sharona, whose presence symbolized for him a womblike comfort, feel like a birth to Monk? The cold slap of reality, you know?

Look, like most other hard-core Monk fans, I enjoy the quirky plot details about him.
And so I was able to enjoy the episode.
But I suspect a lot of viewers who were not so hard core figured things out about 30-35 minutes into the episode.
Unless they get back to writing real mysteries that aren't solved until the very end, I'm afraid that the ratings will drop. Even though it won't lose me as a viewer.

It wasn't even the mystery part that bothered me. It just fell flat for me, and I am not really sure I can put my finger on why. It might be that I miss Sharona more than I thought.

I really do miss Sharona. She had an unconditional love thing going on for Monk that just made their partnership so cool. She rolled her eyes, but she was totally accepting and tried so hard to take care of him in weird situations. Hopefully this new chic will get into that, but it's going to take a while.

Yea I really liked Sharona too. But alas I no longer have a TV w/cable so I can't watch it. But my parents tape it so when I get home for breaks I have a monk marathon that lasts for about 7 hours. It's great. =D
One of my faves was when he took in the little kid for a few days.

OK, but what did you think about the perfume(Shalimar), and a bunch of other things about her that he noticed. Was that on purpose? Because I didn't buy it if it was.
I also think it was dumb to have the woman "play" Janice as well as Trudy.
However, it was just heartbreaking.

Oh, the Shalimar thing, the being allergic to fish, way over the top. It had to have been on purpose, but I don't get that they would target him like that...silly writers this ep. Usually they are much better plottish-wise.

Anyway, I agree, Tom, and it makes it easier because I always forget it is on on Fridays anyway. Last night was the first I'd watched in a long time.

Diane was checking the TV channel guide and saw there's a new episode of MONK on tonight. The episode has something to do with him doing a gig as a store Santa, I think.
The plots last season weren disappointing, but I'll tune in tonight to see if the writers have gotten their act together.

Didn't see it, but just the thought of Monk as a Department Store Santa ... how does he continually get himself into the worst possible scenarios for him? I mean, walking in a sewer? Having dozens of little kids sitting on his lap?
Oh, yeah. The writers. They have to keep showing off his quirks. Right.
