I just thought of something fun.

I consider myself a member who's nominally been here forever but only posts in occasional, short bursts. Now I've thought of a way to measure this pseudoscientifically. The MN-P Product is a rough measure of how often you post, relative to how long you've been here.

Here's how it works. Multiply your member number by your post count. The result is your MN-P Product. The object of the study is to see whether my MN-P is one of the lowest on the site.

Mine is (MN)*(P)=(821)*(2416)= 1,983,536.

What's yours? Everybody check so I can have a good statistical sample.

5818 * 16664 = 96,951,152.

I am ashamed to admit I opened Excel to calculate that.

Edit: 21.37 ppd.

The problem is, this measure doesn't distinguish between whether a low score is due to member number or post count. A new member with only a handful of posts, will have an extremely low score. I think posts per day is a better measure.

All the same, comparing your stats to mine you'll see that the MN-P measure is roughly accurate.

But you're right, it's not a trustworthy measure when applied to newbies.

Wouldn't a more accurate or meaningful result be by taking the number of posts and dividing it by the number of days you've been a member. That would give you the posts per day factor.

registered: August 25, 2004 (466 days)

221 / 466 = 0.47 posts per day

I suppose if you were looking for longevity and taciturnity, you could mulitiply posts per day by the member number.

So: (member #)*(# of posts)/(# of days on Hatrack)

For me: (1178)*(1563)/(1928)=955 (rounded)

I have no idea of my posts per day and of course this doesn't measure posts I've made under different names.

of course, I changed user names after about 800 posts, and that ratcheted up my member number from a 3 digit number to 1910. So I lost posts, but gained abotu 1000 in member number.

*sneak preview*

My landmark is entitled 2000 posts in 20 months and less than 20 years.

I'm not bothering calculating my MN-P products because I know mine would be higher than yours. I'm waiting on someone's old old alt that has less than 100 posts, and a really early number to come post here.

Since I have eight different screen names on Hatrack and I've posted with each and every one of them, this wouldn't tell me anything useful.

MN*P: 1,558,808 -- pretty good I guess, if I had been going for longevity and taciturnity.
ppd: .597

I like Miro's way (posts/per day * member #), as it somewhat eliminates the newbie factor.

By Miro's method, I'm 864.

MN*P=5124*4788=24,533,712
PPD= a leisurely 5.4 (um, not bad considering I was off the internet for over a year between times)

MN*P/D(949)=25,852 [Eek!]

394 * 2122 = 836.068 (including this post)

Posts per day: 2122 (posts)/2259 (days) = .939

So... (394*2122)/2259 = 370

I feel... little.

187 * 1515 = 283,305. Is that the lowest so far?

PPD = 1515/2378 = .637

MN-P/PPD = 283,305/2378 = 119

Beat that!

I used a spreadsheet (Openoffice.org) to do days, because it's easier than doing it by hand.

Today - 4/1/2002 = 1343.
