Which name is a better and more reassuring name: Julian or Ada?

(Just in case you're wondering, Julian is after Julian of Norwich, the "All will be well, and all will be well, and every manner of thing will be well" fourteenth century mystic who wrote Showings which everyone should read. Ada is after Ada Leverson, Oscar Wilde's very cool friend whom he called the Sphinx and she and her husband went bail for him.)

Ada is the middle name of a very close friend (female), so that's where my vote goes.

I already told you, and you know my opinion counts infinitely more than anyone else's ( [Wink] ):

Ada reminds me of aphids, and is not to be trusted. Julian is much more comforting. I would pour my heart out to Julian, but not to Ada. Think of the crises that you (Julian) could avert!

Let me put it this way: If you were sitting on the side of the road sobbing, would you rather have a woman called Julian stop to help you, or a woman called Ada?

Julian makes me think of Julian Lennon. So if it's gonna be a women, then, Ada.

I have a great Aunt named Ada--so Ada gets my vote.

If it was a woman, I'd rather she be named Ada than Julian, but Juliet before either.

Julian is a boy's name. Julie, Julia, Julianne, and Juliette are all female versions I've heard. (That's what my vote would be, but I'm a bit biased, what with being a Julia who goes by Julie.)

Yeah, I would not name a girl Julian, because it would cause gender-confusion at school, church, wherever. Ada is pretty but... very old fashioned. If you're okay with that, then I'm okay with that. [Smile]

My vote goes to Ada because I am old-fashioned so it would seem immensly cool to me. But then, I am somewhat weird ...

Ada sounds like a nice girl's name.

Julian sounds like a girly boy's name.

Ada. Very reassuring. Like the Americans with Disabilities Act. Nicely palindromic.

Julian is a good name for an evil magician or closet Satanist.

I think the name Julian sounds great, very powerful but in a calm or gentle way. Not sure why I think that. It's probably based on a book I read.

My name is Julie, I think of that as a more frivolous name. Maybe that's why I like Julian, it's longer, so I think of it as a weightier name.

Theaca, off topic, but what do you think of Julia as opposed to Julie? My daughter's name is Julia.

Julian sounds too masculine to me. I think Ada is old fashioned but I love old fashioned names so that one gets my vote.

I was almost named Marion Ada after my grandmothers. I would vote Ada for a woman as well. I've only known of a male Julian. Julianne would be the feminine version to me, and that could work, but it seems like a prettier, flightier name than Ada, which to me says down-to-earth and reassuring.

. . .said Avadaru. [Taunt]

As for me, I like just about all the names derived from "Julius". Julian, Julia, Juliet, and so on. They're all nice names, in my opinion.

I'd say Ada, mostly because it's a palindrome. And I automatically associate the name with Ada in The Poisonwood Bible.
