I want to know the artists that recorded a specific rendition of "Baby, It's Cold Outside". I think it's a relatively recent (i.e. post-Bing Crosby) recording. What's unique about it is that it starts with spoken dialog (that sounds almost impromtu) then the song is performed instead of merely sung as a Christmas song. It is sung, but the singers genuinely sound like a couple who've had a great evening and they don't want it to end. The man sounds like he really doesn't want her to go. In turn, the woman almost sounds like she has to work to come up with the reasons she should go, and isn't convincing herself.

I always thought the song a cute, but this couple almost make you feel like you're evesdropping on their little inside joke. It's brilliant.

The dang radio station plays it every once in a while, but never says who it's by. Anyone here have any idea?

I think there's an excellent version with Bing Crosby and Doris Day that sounds very much like a couple doing a verbal exchange.

Another version I happen to like is by Leon Redbone and Zooey Deschanel. It was used in a movie recently (Elf) and really hit a nice note (pardon the pun) at the end of the film.

I take it back. The version I think you want is by Dinah Shore and Buddy Clark. It's the one that most rings a bell for me upon searching.

Check out a snippet:

I'm pretty certain it's not Bing. I usually recognize his voice, and I think the version you are referring to is much more peppy than the one I'm trying to track down.

I'll have to check out the Elf one if I can.

Hmmm. I'm going to need more of the Dinah Shore version to be sure, but I think it's also a little too up-tempo. It also has that hollow sound of a much older recording than the one I want.

Oh well. The Dinah Shore one is my favorite. And yeah, Bing has such a distinctive voice that when I thought more about it I figured you would've picked that one out already.

There's a Ray Charles/Bessie Smith version that's interesting, but also not at all what you're talking about.

dkw and I do a nice version of it too. Sometimes the lyrics get a bit messed up, but that's part of the fun.

"Cole saucily points out the tongue-in-cheek, sexual innuendo of the title track Baby, It's Cold Outside, which she performs as a duet with Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson."

Holly Cole and Ed Roberson is the version that is playing a lot these days, I think it is the one you are talking about. [Big Grin]

Got a playable link? I've seen Holly Cole's name come up a bit when I've searched, but never with anything playable. I'll have to check iTunes when I get home. [Grumble]

How about Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton? I'm not sure about the intro but I do like their rendition of it a lot [Smile]
Although I would think that their voices are very recognizable

Well, it's definitely not the Holly Cole version. [Frown]
