A beautiful, gorgeous film. Finely acted. It explores the conflict between selfish love and duty. Like Syriana, it doesn't adhere to forumulaic depictions of good and evil, but rather tries to be faithful to what is and what happens, rather than what should be and who just rewards.
To me, this seemed like the quintessential feminine film. I won't say 'chick film' because I think it's better than what normally passes for such. Long shots devoted to dressing and undressing, battles fought in words and wounded feelings rather than with bombs and blades. I hope you all will see it.

I liked the movie, but the book was better, especially since it has a more complete ending.
Oh, and the Chairman seems less creepy in the book. Seeing him and 10-year-old Sayuri-to-be on the big screen, as much as I loved the actor, kind of bothered me.

Blayne, I thought they made it clear in the books that he was much older than her. Wasn't he in his forties when they met? The actor they chose for him in the movie was very kind-looking, which I liked, though.
Also, I was discussing this movie with my opthamologist and her assistant this morning, and we decided that the biggest problem with the movie is that it's presented as some great romance, when the book was not so much a romance.
