Israeli PM Ariel Sharon has quit the Likud party and is forming his own party to run in elections next year. What does the Hatrack Israeli/Jewish/Arabic Community think of this recent political storm destined to cause scandals within Israel?

I think this has been coming for weeks (maybe longer), and isn't much of a shock.

I've been in another world, rivka. Dave says this was expected, as well, but I've been immersed in other things.

You know, I really should pay more attention. [Frown]

This is breaking news? It wasn't even news when it happened, Blayne. I couldn't stop laughing when all of the news services kept writing about him leaving the Likud as though it was some sort of surprise. Everyone who was paying the least bit of attention knew that was going to happen.

Sharon's actions were 100% contrary to the Likud constitution. He didn't belong in the party. Now he's in his Kadima party, which seems to have a membership requirement of either having been indicted or jailed or at the very least investigated for corruption.

And now that Sharon is out, and Bibi is running the Likud, he's acting exactly like Sharon (big surprise) by trying to find ways to kick his rivals out of the party.

I voted for Sharon against Barak. I felt sick to my stomach when I did it, because I knew what Sharon was long before he started making it so obvious, but Barak was a clear and present danger. And mark my words: Bibi is no different. He'll do the same kinds of things.

Only Moshe Feiglin, who got a third of the votes that Bibi did in the recent Likud leadership elections, is offering anything different. Only his Jewish Leadership group has remained unbuyable and incorruptable. Which is exactly why Bibi is trying to hard to get them out of the Likud.

*pat pat* I would amend that to, "anyone who was paying much attention to Israeli politics."

I think the part I don't understand is that Sharon left the Likud over a month ago. Blayne, the article you posted was from November 21st. What's "***BREAKING NEWS***" about that?

Is it "breaking news" if it's been receiving coverage for over a month already? That's how long I've known about this, and I know diddly squat about Israeli politics. I do, however, listen to a lot of NPR, and they've been giving a fair amount of coverage to it since November.

Edit: *points at starLisa's post above* See?

As far as I'm aware, the Hatrack "Arabic Community" consists of... well, me. And I don't post about this issue here, or much about the Middle East in general anymore.

So is Sharon's new party based around Land For Peace like his administration was? (it worked really well for the American Indians. I'm sure it'll work wonders for Israel.)

Sharon is an opportunist. His party is for doing whatever is necessary to maintain power. You should see their platform. No details about anything.

Israel really needs some strong liberal leaders willing to work for peace and get rid of corruption . . .
