I get what a dobie is, now, but I'm still unclear on the whole mayfly thing. I'm guessing that it's neither an insect nor a book by Kevin O'Donnell. But beyond that, I'm lost.

Mayfly is posted in the thread title as a warning to all that it's either (a) something they need help with quickly, (b) looking for someone for a specific question, (c) may be deleted once whatever the threadstarter was looking for was found.

When I asked the same question I was told the name comes from the insect of the same name that has an extremely short lifespan.

The reasoning is that over the years, several of us have been very annoyed when threads that we were participating in were deleted by the thread starter, and argued that deleting a thread, and thus, other people's thoughts, was bad form. (Particularly when you're deleting the thread specifically to get rid of some of the responses you received.)
So this is a caveat emptor type of thing. We're warned that the thread will likely go away, so we can't be annoyed later when it does. The practice was started by CT, and is usually used for posts that either are deemed, by their originator, of very temporary importance, or for those that are very personal and possibly revelatory.

This is like the third time I've seen a thread with this title. I don't understand why Hatrack has adopted such a confusing, nonsensical bit of terminology.

I heard that they weren't really brothers. But "Doobie Cousins" didn't test well with the focus groups.

Because shared history and quirkiness is what makes us a community.
Will we always be a community? Who knows. But Hatrack certainly has been a community to me over the years, and things like shared in-jokes are part of what make it feel like home to me. (And, when I was a newbie, being aware that such things existed did not put me off, but rather made the place more interesting.)
We still call it a mayfly because once somebody called it that, and we thought it was clever, and it caught on.
We call them dobies because someone named dobie used to do them--and, unlike most people, he often did them well--and so we named his clever invention after him.
We call(ed) ourselves Jatraqueros because somebody who immersed himself in latino culture thought it was clever, and we agreed.
These are the things that community is made of. When we no longer have shared stories and in-jokes we will no longer have a community.

But, as long as their are smart alecks in this world, that shouldn't happen for at least three thousand years.

breyerchic, I disagree with shinda. Shinda is a purely regional thing, and other areas have referred to them as picnics, or to themselves as clumps.

We need to come up with a nickname for the OSC-disillusionment phenomenon, wherein people who have loved his books for years are stunned to figure out that he's not a liberal, and start threads to tell him how very wrongheaded he is, in the hopes that he will finally see the light, thanks to their post, and possibly start up a correspondence friendship, and also get them published, all out of gratitude.

I just looked up, and yeah he had about 40 posts after I joined, said he was a high school freshman, this was when I was a senior, so he'd be a junior now. And Ick, he would have only been 12.

I like the quirky phrases on Hatrack. I don't know everything on breyerchic's list, and that's OK. But what I really like about Hatrack is that when I and others ask about these terms, the responses are polite and helpful.
(although I must say, starLisa's question thread about mayflies generated a lot more discussion than mine did!!)

Maybe you're just modest, and I almost didn't put that one, but I decided it helps explain wench con. It was on the front page for like my first six months though, so you must have seen it.

Of all the potentially confusing and/or nonsensical bits of Hatrack adopted terminology, "Mayfly" isn't one of them. The first time I saw it I instantly understood it (though perhaps for a different reason that the stated "short lifespan of the insect")
When I first saw something like "Hey so-and-so, did you check your email? (Mayfly)" I instantly took it to mean the thread "may fly" as in "fly away" or "disappear". How is that confusing or nonsensical?
