Growing hair?! Aiya, I have a Winter Formal in 3 days but my hair is so thin and bleh. I keep thinking my hair is patchy; it's that bad.
I was in a swim team for the past 10 years of my life, so the chlorine and extreme sun (I swim in an outdoor Southern California pool) is merciless. I always seem to lose a chunk of hair whenever I: take a shower, comb my hair, put on my swim cap, take off my swim cap, lean against people, and turn my head really fast (hehe just kidding).
This is my first formal and I know it's probably crazy to have nice hair in 3 days but I guess I could try things in preparation for my next formal.
I'm hesitant about wigs; I like to move around alot and it'll be pretty embarrassing to have it fall off or something.
My mom already: massaged my head for the past 10 years to the point of dizziness, gave me weird chinese hair-growing shampoo that I'm not supposed to use during my period (apparently it's that powerful ), made me go on this all-meat diet for protein, washed my hair in rice water, gave me these "ancient mushroom" tablets that cost 100 bucks for only a small back!!!, and other strange things.
Sigh. Does anyone know any other things that could work?

If I were you I'd have someone put my hair into a pretty "do" on top of my head and wear a gorgeous dress and smile.
All that swimming may have messed-up your hair, but I bet it made your body fit and gorgeous (wanna trade ). Play to your strengths and have fun.

well they have clip in hair extentions for formal up-dos, they are not as likely to fall out and they merely suplement your hair.

Actually, all the swimming gave me this... man-body :'( I have huge shoulders and small boobies and only a few strands of hair left. Gah. I didn't even get my dress yet (and that's whooole another problem)! The ones I've tried on makes me look like a gorilla. In a tutu.
Clip extensions... Hmm... my hair is this weird bleachy color though.. it'd be hard to match it.

Small boobies are not such a bad thing. I speak from the experience of having big boobies that are a pain in the shoulder, back, and, uh, black eye when I try to run.
But that gorilla in a tutu image...

There I was, post-pregnancy, nothing that fit, and a family wedding impending. I called up Nordstroms, the big department store, and made an appointment with the personal shopper. She asked my size, what kind of dress I was looking for, favorite colors, and price range. When I showed up for my appointment, I was escorted into a big private room with a bunch of dresses laid out for me. The personal shopper helped me, ran to fetch more dresses while I sat in the big room and nursed my baby, and, once the dress was decided on, helped me pick out all the accessories, including a fancy, swoopy hat.
There was no extra charge for the service. And I still love that fancy, swoopy hat.
That's my advice -- get help shopping, and get a fancy, swoopy hat.

Hats are very cool--I have a friend who has quite a collection that she wears to church. It is quite the sight to see--some have big swooping feathers!

Work what you've got... I have the thickest hair EVER, second only to Cousin It. It is a hassle and a half. I will FedEx you half of my hair. But really, go get it done! If you have a decent hairstylist, she/he'll know what to do with your hair.
On the dress topic... you could always go with a skirt/top?? Most formal dresses are bleehhh to begin with! Or long gauchos and a nice top, those are kind of cute on more muscular bodies. Mmm, or a fancy blazer.

jennabean, I was gonna suggest something similar. More hair comes off in my brush each day than some people have on their heads.
In the future, you can use a shampoo/conditioner product (available at beauty supply stores, but I forget the name) that bonds to chlorine. You shampoo as soon as possible after swimming, and it really helps. When I was swimming a bunch, I used it, and it really helped my hair not be so brittle. My almost-step-mother loves to swim and uses it every time she does, and when she started using it it actually helped rebuild her damaged hair.
I'll try to find out the name.

Tante, I think the prices on some of those cover the extra service cost I dunno, that'd be really fun though; I could be Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, sans the whole hooker thing
jennabean and ketchupqueen: I dunno, to me, women with lots of hair always seemed more feminine. It's like, wow, you radiate womanliness so much you're all over the place! And I guess, since I'm athletic and junk, I need a balance. Through hair.
Unless there's remedies to an increased bustline.... but there's Victoria's Secret for that. I welcome black eyes, quidscribis!! I do, I do
The chinese hair-growing shampoo made my hair darker, but I guess it was so powerful that more hair fell off. Gah. My mommy's a cutie when it comes to ancient Chinese wisdom of medicine though, so I don't want to hurt her feelings. Hehe

You can always have whatever dress you pick out altered to fit you better. I think both my graduation dress and one of my prom dresses (this gorgeous, long red one) were altered to make sure they flattered me.
As for hair, um, I think they have thickening shampoos for fine hair. I think Pantene makes one. I'm not sure how quickly they work, though. Go with an up-do.

Kitsune, Again, I'd suggest finding your strengths. I like the hat idea, Victoria's Secret can lift, smoosh together and enhance your boobies... and don't even tell me that you don't have drop-dead sexy legs! Allow yourself to listen to the personal shopper, or your best friend, and choose a look/dress that let's you feel good about where you are and who you are.
As an aside, I've gone to more than one event where I was so uncomfortable in my clothes (and at times, in my own skin) that I didn't have any fun and the people I was with felt that unease. You being there, happy and fully present will be more attractive than any makeover.

I remember quite clearly -- because I asked so many times -- there was no extra charge for the personal shopper services. I think they make their money because you land up buying a dress, shoes, hat, purse, jewelry all at their store, instead of elsewhere at the mall.

It also tends to pay back in customer loyalty, and spreading the news about the wonderful service, as Tanta is so perfectly displaying.
