I, like ambyr, have been trying for ages in vain to recall the name of a children's book I once read.

The story was set in India. It was about a boy whose sister Maya went blind. The family tried to get money from the money-lender to go on a long journey to get her cured, but he said no and the boy said or did something and his parents were embarrassed at his bad manners and then something got mixed up and the money-lender accused him of being a thief, so he had to run away. Or maybe he did actually steal money. I forget. Anyway, he took his sister and they set out to journey to...I forget, but it was some place far away, where the curing folks were. On the way, they meet a jackal and hide in a cave-type thing, and beg food in the city, and eventually after several adventures of the sort, they reach their destination. Darned if I remember anything about how it ends, although I do recall a temple of sorts and a kindly old man/monk/doctor figuring somewhere in all that.

I've tried googling loads of details, few details, every combo I can think of, and nothing comes up. For all the details I recall, and how much I remember being blown away by it, I haven't got a clue about a title or author.

Anyone happen to have read this book as well?

Try this: Go to google hacks, and type in a four word quote, it might generate more info.

Google hacks is a website, and on it you can find new ways to employ google, this is one of those ways, it will search your word string and attempt to complete it by finding the next words on the net, this might lead to your title.

By any chance is it ***drumroll, please*** The Road to Agra by Aimee Sommerfelt? Published 1961.

There is a wonderful database, NoveList, which allows you to search for books based on plot elements. I was able to find this just through "India" and "blind girls." Cool, yeah? Check to see if your local library has a subscription.

Oh, and the link above is not to NoveList. It was just somewhere that I found googling the title I got from NoveList. The summery seems to match your description.

That's it, I think, Amilia! Thanks! I've just been using general search engines, and not book specific ones. "India" and "blind girls" got me nowhere on those.

Now I just need to find a copy. And write down the title somewhere so I don't forget it again...
