This is BIG for me. I never win anything. But I competed in a DDR tournament this morning at the local arcade, and I won my category!(light mode)
I think next time I'll bump it up to standard mode. But I'll keep practising first.

Tante, there is no cash value for that. You normally play games to earn the tickets, so it depends on luck and/or skill at the games. DDR doesn't give out tickets, unless you win part of the tournament.
Erosomniac, the machine at our arcade is only $.50 a game. It's a lot cheaper, and I don't play at the arcade very much. Plus, admission and all games in this tournament were free.

Lucky - they were a dollar a game, for three stages, when I was playing, although in Vegas it's 5 stage games for 50 cents, usually. I just played way, way too much.
Also factoring in the cost of the three incarnations of the game I bought for PSone/PS2, and three sets of pads (including two Octane pads).
*shudder* At least I was in shape, I guess.

The difference being that the arcade or purchasing the home version is legal.

they're both quite legal. A game pad can be bought anywhere, DDR which is not strictly limited to the arcade can be bought/download for like 5$ if you really wanna buy it. But ya noones going to arrest for getting a ROM.

Arrested, no. Banned for advocating illegal actions on a private forum, quite possibly. Admins are usually rather touchy about that.

I don't think the emulator is illegal. I've played two of them, and they're very similar to DDR, but both have unique looks. And it's not like DDR is the only dancing game on the market, either--there's In the Groove and others as well. So making the emulator and using it can't be illegal.
What WOULD be illegal is using officially licensed songs from the DDR games with your emulator. Because you didn't buy DDR, you didn't pay for the songs. Happily, there are a LOT of original step files for the emulators, to a variety of fun and popular songs.
And congrats on your win, Tinros! That's impressive. I don't think I could win a DDR competition, even on Light. My legs just stutter too much.

The low odds of being prosecuted for ROM use don't make it any less illegal to obtain and use them (unless you purchased an original version of the game, and even that's a pretty gray area).
Jaywalking's illegal, even if you don't get ticketed or arrested for it terribly often.

Emulators are generally not illegal. Unauthorized ROMs of copyrighted games are. Blayne was talking about ROMs.

Technically this is a public forum, with rules.
Anyways, Congratulations! I used to be decent at DDR, I'm probably still decent at light.

I wussed out of this big DDR tournament in Anime Expo (in California) 'cause all these guys are absolutely insane in it. I don't play at home so when my friends and I go out, I always push for places that has arcades I play heavy but I'm not too good at it.

You know you're out of touch with the game when they change all the terminology - I'm assuming "heavy" is the "hard" mode. The one with the red feet, ne?

I used to be pretty good at DDR before I messed up my ankle (my old roommate had it on PS2). Over Christmas I played an arcade version for the first time in months. I wasn't too bad -- I got B's on Light mode -- but I'm not nearly as good as I was six months ago when I was doing some songs in heavy mode.

See, it used to be Light, Medium, Heavy and...what was the last one called...Panic mode, or something. I forget. You couldn't get to Panic mode without a cheat code.
I saw someone playing the other day, and I couldn't even recognize half the crap that was going on on the screen. Does DDR have HOLDS now?!

There is a "Challenge" mode, which has incredibly difficult versions of some of the standard songs.

DDR modes: Beginner(normally one to three feet) Light(anywhere from one to six feet, depending on song: Legend of Max has 6 feet, because it's hard no matter what) Standard(anywhere from four to eight feet, I can do almost anything on this mode, up to seven feet) Heavy(five to flashing ten feet- the flashing means it's harder than a normal ten. I can do a select few songs on this mode, depending on foot ranking)
And the supreme: Oni mode(also called Demon Step, it's almost impossible)

Kitsume, the machine I play on at the mall arcade is the Extreme machine. I think there's a Max2 machine somewhere around my area, but I'm not sure, and seeing as Extreme has everything that's on Max2 in the first place, it wouldnt be worth finding out.

The 3rd Mix was the best of the ancient mixes. I remember not really liking the 4th mix.
Ahhh, I played DDR at my friend's house and couldn't pass Sakura on heavy. I used to!! You really have to keep up, there were a couple of little kids being really good for their age at my arcade @_@
