We went out to dinner with my parents Friday night. Sasha, my son, was being very well behaved that evening. About half way through our dinner the table next to us gets up to leave. A grandmotherly woman from that table walks up to Sasha and says, "You have been very good tonight."
She slips him a dollar.
Now my parents thought that was a great thing for this kindly woman to do. My wife, on the other hand, went into deep suspicion mode.
My first thought was, "Wow. He's five and already ladies are slipping him singles. What is he going to be like at 18?"
(To calm fears, as the lady left she explained. She lost her own son at about Sasha's age. His good behavior and outgoing personality at the table reminder her of that lost son, or perhaps who that son could have been like. This calmed wife's fears, but set my warning meter on high.)
