Hooray for me, I was told on Thursday that I'm the Employee of the Month for December. My manager gave a little speech in front of the waitstaff about how I was doing the work of two people and how streamlined I made the kitchen run during a very stressful time. Basically a Lyrhawnfest. Then I got a "Champpion of the Month" pin to put on my hat (to go along with my one year pin and my MVP pin).

And to top it off, I got tickets to a Pistons game for the end of the month, with a VIP parking pass. Good tickets too, I think they got them from a season ticket holder. So yay for me!

*APPLAUSE*

Rock on. It always makes me happy to see people who do an exceptional job get rewarded for it.

Hmm. Maybe we should do something like this at my work. We have people who work really hard and we don't really give them much recognition, to be honest.

Well, way to go Lyrhawn.

Raise? We don't need no stinkin' raise! We work for PINS!

But, I'm glad that you get the recognition, anyway.

Where I work, instead of a raise, you get a TITLE!

Like I'm Tante Shvester, BA, RN, BSN, CHPN, CRRN, Nursing Supervisor, Rehabilitation Specialist, Team Educator (I need a fold-out business card)

There are LPN's earning more than I do.

Tante: yep.

I've been pondering the economics of why nursing pay makes so little sense (since my Dad's a home health nurse).

So far the best explanation I've come up with is our utterly backwards medical insurance system of corporate fiefdoms. Specifically, well-trained, well-paid nurses are turned from an economic good into a wash, or even an economic bad, due to the byzantine standardization of medical procedures.

*gulp* It's been a long time since I've checked what nurses make. Break it to me gently. I need to know what I'll be making as a BSN.

RN Salary Survey

I do pretty well -- over 60K/year. Don't worry. You can earn even more, depending on where, when, and how much you work. It's just that the nurse pay scale is kind of flat. You don't necessarily get raises based on experience and expertise. You are more likely to find that everyone's ship rises on the same tide, whether they are dinghy nurses or ocean liners.

As a starting nurse you'll be fine. Just hope we get a complete healthcare reform before you're into the last two thirds of your career -- your pay isn't going to go up any appreciable amount, otherwise.
