I'm so excited. I know, I'm a geek, but I love the whole Olympic thing. Tonight I'll be cooking supper early so we can all eat, then I'll build a fire and we'll get cozy and watch the ceremonies and the parade of nations. Yes, I even like hearing all the obscure facts about the countries and the biographical facts about the various flag bearers. I also love to see how each country is dressed.

The best part about tonight? My husband isn't home! Wes is at the fire station. *dances*

Now, don't get me wrong I love my hubby and miss him when he's gone, but if he's got to be gone then this is a night for him to be gone - I won't have to hear "This is so lame, why are we watching people march around a stadium."

I get to revel in my Olympic geekdom without interruption. My Mom is another Olympic geek so she'll be here with me, she plans to pop popcorn. And, snow flurries are in the forecast. Just as long as we don't lose power, it has the makings of a great night.

NOT ME. Except maybe some of the athlete parade to see which nations have cute female athletes and which don't.

I'm not watching, but I don't have a television. It sounds like marvelous fun, and I like seeing everyone parade. [Smile] It's very optimistic - I like seeing people strive for something.

I'm watching, and hoping smitty doesn't look at the switch that controls my power.

I think they're fun, and sometimes they have cool horses or something (usually summer obviously) to make me smile.

And the Knitting olympics begins tonigth, so I'm starting my project (the goal of this is to craft something, knit or otherwise that is challenging to do in that period of time).

I wasn't going to watch, because I had an overnight "date" with my husband all arranged for tonight. The kids were farmed out, and I had a sexy little black dress to wear to dinner. We were going out with our best friends.

Then I caught my children's miserable cold (*hack*cough*), so it looks like we're spending the evening watching the Olympics openning ceremonies instead. And Battlestar Galactica.

Not a total loss. [Smile]

Jeniwren I'll be doing the same. Opening ceremonies and Battlestar. Good times.

When I was a kid, we never ever had cable . . . except for the Olympics. I prefer the winter events to summer for sure. Figure skating . . . I can't get enough. I like watching the skiing and bobsledding and stuff too. Summer is good too, but not the same.

I love the equine events during the summer but they're harder to find on TV, so the only thing I really watch during them is Swimming and mainly just to see if there are any IU people in it.

Maybe I'll wear a little black dress to watch the opening ceremonies.

I'll be watching some if it. I'm supposed to be getting a call tonight from someone across the country about a newsletter I'm working on. I know I'll get the call once I actually decide I'm interested in the opening ceremonies!

Well, another bunch of boring interviews conducted by "Look at me! I'm more important than the Olympics!! Look at me!!!" commentators.

I'll be watching - in fact it's just getting ready to start here. I love this stuff. [Smile]

If that makes me a geek, well then that's fine.

Personally, I loved it. I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff. "Imagine" really got to me. I mean, think about it: all of those people united. In a world of war and political strife, that just strikes me as amazing. Go Olympics!

And even that wasn't possible because all the women I saw were wearing big jackets and big wool hats that completely covered their hair.

Because cuteness is all about bodies and hair.

**

We watched the ceremony tonight. Parts were spectacular, and other parts... surreal. I don't think this was helped by the Australian commentary which was by two sports commentators, and who were almost completely silent for all of the cultural stuff. What they did say was fairly inane.

My favorite part was when the acrobats were climbing on that screen and formed the dove.

I was over the whole John Lennon "Imagine" song stuff - because I don't consider that a song for peace but rather an extremely anti-Religion song. I've never liked it.

They've lit up the Olympic flame in Salt Lake for this years Olympics. It's brings back good memories of what it was like when the Olympic village was right here on my campus during the 2002 winter games.

Belle, I agree fully with you about the song "Imagine".

That was VERY cool, though, it would have been more cool if the bird at the end was actually a dove, and not some sort of hawk/eagle thing.

it would also have been cool if Bob Costas hadn't opened his huge yap and told us before it even started that they were going to form a dove at the end. Bob Costas is really annoying.

But, I watched the whole ceremony anyway and it was really fun. I enjoyed Peter Gabriel (though I don't dig the song OR Yoko Ono), but my favorite part was Nessun Dorma at the end. [Smile] They were focusing on the history of Italy, on all the things Italy is famous for (the Ferrari, etc.) and I kept thinking "What about opera? Italy invented opera!" Not to mention Pavarotti. [Smile] So I was really happy when he wrapped everything up with one of the most beautiful arias by an Italian composer.
