Hi, I just booted my computer, and it says it found new hardware. The hardware it says it finds in my HD (Maxtor yada yada yada). It can't find the drivers for it.
Here is the twist. My harddrive looks fine and it works fine. My CD-Rom is not in "My Computer" tho. When I go to device manager it does not show a CD-Rom. However, it shows my HD. It also shows a yellow question mark on a device titled "other devices." When I expand it there is a sting of numbers.
I looked at my CD-ROm and downloaded a firmware flash--but when I run it, it says I do not have that device.
My HD drivers are already installed just fine. I put in a different CD to see what would happen, and I get the same error message about the HD Drivers and the CD icon is not there.
It is also missing in safe mode.
I am stumped. Any suggestions? IT is XP-Home and a regular CD-Rom (not RW). Thanks

It is confusing to write because it is a confusing error. I will go step by step with the error process.
1: I start my computer. After it boots and goes to my desktop, the add new hardware wizrd starts.
2: The add new wizard hardware identifies my HD as being the new device.
3: I can either choose to install the driver or skip the step. If I choose to install the driver, it says no driver is found--even if I manually point it to the right driver.
4: Step 2 and 3 is odd, because once I am out of the hardware wizard, I can see C: in My computer. I can save folders, run applications--in short, my system works fine...EXCEPT for:
5: When I look in "My Computer," my CD-ROM is missing. There is no D:.
6: I look in device manager, and there is a yellow excalamation by "other devices." My HD is in my device manager, my CD-Rom is not.
7: I try to update the "otherdevices" with my CD-ROm Driver--nothing. I try to update it with my hd driver (because that is what the add new hardware wizard said)--nothing.
I try to boot off of a bootable CD, it thinks I have no CD-Rom.
I boot into dos with my a:, but it says I have no CD connected.
I have tried different ADI cords (? long flat cords) and different cd-roms, cdrws, et cetera--and I get the same symptoms.

When I boot to DOS prompt with cd-rom support withmy a: bott disk, it says the mscd001 is missing.

lem - did you build this box yourself? Are you sure your IDE cable for your hard drive is in the right slot on the motherboard? Or are the hard drive and the CD-ROM drive sharing a IDE cable?
It is like it is thinking the missing CD-ROM is your hard drive --- so it is actually asking for the drivers for the CD-ROM, or whatever. It certainly sounds messed up.
I may not be able to check back on this for your answer for awhile. Maybe others can step in here.

well, I replaced the cord--again. I also followed these instructions and edited autoexec.bat and config.sys.
When I rebooted, I got the same error message about my HD, but I also got an error message for my CD ROM!!!!! woo hooo.
My Cdrom is working, now I am going to work on my own to see what those error messages are.
MY first step is Adaware, Spybot, ccleaner, hijackthis..yada yada yada. Then a reg clean, defrag, and then start looking at programs et cetera~!

Sound more like an issue with the IDE cable or with your IDE/SATA controller or your controller's drivers. Have you screwed around in the BIOS recently? Installed any new software? New Hardware?
Autoexec.bat and Config.sys? What version of windows are you running, exactly? If you are running 98 or later, you shouldn't be using those 16-bit drivers for Windows.

I had a problem a bit like this, and it turned out to be a bad cable. Sometimes it would boot up just fine, sometimes it would see my DVD burner as a regular CD-ROM drive, and sometimes it would think it was a removable disk drive and try to install new hardware.

It was probably the cable. I replaced it once. Hmm...
I know the Auto and Config shouldn't make a difference, but I got exasperated and did the shotgun approach.
Since I replaced the cable at the same time, I am thinking it was the cable. What a frustration that the first cable I replaced was bad too. It was used, so I replaced it with a new cable I found at school.
