I was surprised at all the "Willy Nagin and the Chocolate City" T-Shirts down there. The FEMA Evacuation Plan T-Shirts were kinda funny, but I about lost it at one of the resaurants that offered "MRE's", but advised patrons to order early, as they took several weeks to arrive....

Oh, you should have heard the conversation that ensued after my boy told me he was going to "the FEMA park" for something-or-other.
"The FEMA park? FEMA has a park?" "Yeah, they have all kinds of great rides in which you fend for yourself and try not to drown! Fun for the whole family!"
Then we got into all the kinds of rides and games that the FEMA park has to offer.
I was pretty surprised to see how bad things were down there. I had kind of assumed some major improvements would have been made. I noticed a lot of the larger stores (Saks, Virgin, Foot Locker) were still closed, where the individual type places were open. Most of the areas I were around were actually in good shape (meaning lots of wind, but no water damage) but I traveled through some areas that were just horrible.

I haven't seen any of the bad areas in person. I live Uptown, and things are pretty nice here. The only annoyance for me is that stores close a lot earlier. The mall closes at 7 instead of 9, which means that I have to do shopping BEFORE or BETWEEN class instead of after.
And it's hard to get food after nine.
But it's okay. We're the chocolate milk of America.
The thing is, I really liked Nagin when he was cursing up a storm on CNN and in other interviews about "We need some $&$(% buses! They need to get their asses down here!" And so forth. Now, he's lucky that I can't vote in the state of Louisiana. Yet.

Yeah, it's been talked about around here. I'd never even heard of the term 'chocolate city' before, but that's not surprising since I am neither chocolate myself nor do I live in a chocolate city.
It was a pretty stupid, racist series of statements. I mean, there isn't much of an easy way to say what he was trying to: "Don't worry guys, this city will be predominantly black again," and it's made more troubling by the fact that I can easily empathize with a minority as a whole and a minority as an individual liking the idea of a city that is 'theirs', where they are not the odd man out, so to speak.
But I think Nagin probably stumbled into the most racist, awkward, and stupid way to say it that he possibly could've.

I was only there for three hours- it was only two days after the chocloate city remark and almost all the little shops in The French Quarter already had the "Willy Nagin and the Choclate City" shirts for sale.
My favorites though were the ones that say
Fix Everything My A$$
I still regret not buying one.
