Does anyone know where I can purchase a cheap version of XP key?
I have the disk, but Microsoft won't let me use my Valid key! GRRRRRRRRARRRGH
I am giving it to a friend and his computer is very different. I am now using xp Pro--so my key should be fine.
The Microsoft rep refused to activate it--saying the key is too old and the hardware is too different. I am so raging mad. IT is on no other computer. I have had the key for years.
Anyway, I don't want to recommend that he pay $100 at the store if there is an online place I can buy the key for cheaper.

Perhaps the producers of the computer your XP was originally on might have a suggestion, or (admittedly unlikely) be willing to act as your advocates?

Call Microsoft again and get a different rep. I have had this problem. I kept upgrading my computer and every time I upgraded it recognized that I had different hardware and made me re-enter my key. After 5 times I had to start calling Microsoft every time but they didn't give me too much grief. It was highly inconvienent though as I was in Korea and had to call the states because my Korean was not good enough to talk to their Korean representatives. Insist on them allowing you to use your software. You paid for it.

I'm going to third the 'call them again' suggestion. I had a similar issue when I upgraded my machine. Took a while, but they did eventually let me activate.

And give a hissy fit if necessary. You bought it, you legally own it, and they have no right to stop you from using it.
