It may be interesting to note this poem from the year 1900. Those who complain of the backstabbing liberal media might want to consider how many victorious wars the US fought in the twentieth century, in spite of traitors like this guy :
quote: Jehovah, Lord, beneath whose smile Our fathers fought in Freedom's name, And wrested from the British Isle Our country, loved and known to fame, Oh, gracious Lord, withhold Thy hand While we expand, while we expand.
Ye heathen hordes of Cuba's Isle And Aguinaldo's lesser breeds, Ye may not bask in Freedom's smile; Your Uncle Samuel knows your needs. Throw down your arms and meekly stand While we expand, while we expand.
The doctrine taught by James Monroe And maintained for a hundred years Was but a bluff, it now must go Since we've embraced both hemispheres. Oh, Lord, extend Thy helping hand While we expand, while we expand.
'Tis true the Declaration says That just power from the governed springs, But then the Declaration lays Far too much stress on little things; So, gracious Lord, withhold Thy hand While we expand, while we expand.
We've waved on high the Stripes and Stars With liberty the glad refrain We've licked in three successive wars Old England, Mexico, and Spain. The chip is on our shoulder yet, Don't you forget, don't you forget.
So Kaiser William be advised, Don't knock this chip off, understand, For if you do you'll be chastised And we'll annex the Fatherland. We mention this with some regret, Lest you forget, lest you forget!
The poem is a parody of Kipling's "Recessional".

Sometimes I wish poetry still had a significant presence in the mainstream media, the form has such great potential for such a wide variety of expression. I think it's rather sad that I can name more poets from the 1800's than from the present day.
