Washington Post

quote:
The government's Internet censors scrambled, ordering one Web site after another to delete the letter. But two days later, in an embarrassing retreat, the party bowed to public outrage and scrapped the editor in chief's plan to muzzle his reporters.
Ah, the internet is a beautiful thing...

I think the description of how dissidents race to post information ahead of the censors is rather fascinating. It's like high-tech samizdat.

Thanks for that, Bob. I smiled as I read it. And a song/chant kept going through my mind as I did:

"Power to the people,
Power to the people,
Power to the people,
Power to the people, right on!"

The 'Net might have some unfortunate aspects to it, but it really does have the power to subvert government attempts to shut people up. Which is a very good thing.

That is awesome!

Hooray for the truth!
Hooray for free access to information!
Hooray for the internet!

Oppressive governments are quickly becoming a thing of the past. It's impossible to repress a population which can't be kept ignorant. Knowledge is power. Hooray for freedom!

Though, unfortunately while the letter did get out, the writer was punished and his section in the paper was removed. So while China might have backed off on the point system, they got rid of one of the areas that the point system was going to combat anyway.
