I just got a job blogging for a company (YAY.) For the past few days I have been researching blogs from other companies and the evolution of the blog culture.

I was wondering if any of you either blog for other companies, or have any ideas what potential a blog could have for increasing the exposure and presence of a company and/or fostering a feeling of closeness between buyer and seller.

Finally I was wondering if anybody thinks a blog is simply put a waste of time or has little to no possibilities for productivity. I know its a boring topic, but you guys/girls come from so many backgrounds I figured you could help me not waste time in my research/implementation.

I don't know much about this, but that guy who blogged in New Orleans during the Katrina aftermath absolutely raised the stature and goodwill of that company to the stratosphere.

Did you see that one? I will try to find a link to it.

That's where it was. Looks like it's morphed into something a bit different.

I'm actually aghast and somewhat cynically depressed by the growth of "corporate blogs." I think juggling the demands of honesty (for closeness) with marketing is something that's bound to wind up with a marketing victory.

But at the same time there are concerns with a company not having some sort of a blog nowadays. I researched my company online and alot of customers say that because my employers lack a significant online presence they feel the company is at best less effective at worst, scam artists out to screw them.

I am creating a blog for them out of the belief that being more open with what a company does will increase profits as people will not be as skeptical. My particular company helps people to invest and that involves money down. People want to know what they are getting into before they invest money in your company.

Thx for the blog link, Ill tell you how helpful it was in a bit.

I'm not sure why a blog now constitutes a "significant online presence." In the old days, we called that a "webpage." [Smile]

I think having an online presence will make you more reputable, but you have to seriously consider what you're actually going to "blog" about. Will you be discussing financial news? The inner workings of the company? What you had for lunch? I've seen corporate blogs take each of these approaches.

No this would be a blog that tracks the seminars my company holds.

I would blog about upcoming seminars as well as how successful the last one was. I would field questions, and write bio's on speakers as well as news relevant to what they discuss.

Down the road I might be involved with a corporate intranet blog, but Ill jump that hurdle when I reach it.

I agree that all I want to do could possibly be done on a webpage, but I would like to experiment with blogging to see how that works out.

You're going to host it on your domain, right? Because there are few things less professional-looking than hosting your blog on LiveJournal or something.

I've never heard of a corporate blog before. Do you have any links to existing ones that would help give me an idea of what they're like? just curious. BlackBlade, congrats, sounds like a sweet gig. This isn't full-time work, is it?

No we would be hosting the blog on our own domain, it would look retarded if it was using some blogging service.

Uprooted:
Its part time right now but with the amount of work and the potential for that work to give me more to do they said they could hire me full time in the future. Right now its part time but it really wouldnt suprise me if it evolves into a full time job.

Interestingly enough I have found firms that you can hire to create a blog for your company, I guess its an ever expanding market. You can go check out googles blog at

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/

Interestingly enough they use a blogging service for theirs. I am actually having our webmaster create a template program that I could use to update my companies blog. Google at least seems to post on a 1-3 day basis. That would be the goal that I would have for my particular companies blog.

On a side note just having a blog can bump where you show up on an internet search engine significantly, and its much cheaper than paying for it.

Nice blog, expecially that linked-to one about Adsense helping the developing countries. [Smile] Do you know how long this SBI has been around?
