...but it won't be fully explored, because it's on the same grounds on which a major cultural Passion play occurs yearly.

quote:
Local people began re-enacting the Passion of Christ there in 1833, to give thanks for divine protection during a cholera epidemic - a ritual which now draws as many as a million spectators every year.

The site will not be fully explored because it is now considered a religious centre in its own right, said Mr Sanchez of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

Very cool, although I wish there was a way to excavate the rest without ruining it for the modern worshippers. [Big Grin]

Sounds very interesting. I always like ancient pyramids and such. They just seem so mysterious and cool.

Leave it buried for the next generation of archeologists, or the generation afterwards. The finders of KingTutankhamun destroyed most of the information that could have been gleaned from an intact Tomb.
Considering the crudity of current technology and current preservation methods, opening the pyramid today will similarly cause a large portion of the valuable information contained within to be destroyed.

There are actually a fair number of non-invasive imaging techniques available these days that could be used on the site without disturbing anything.

But yeah, I agree with aspectre that it isn't a bad thing that the site will sit unexplored. I shudder to think of Schliemann tearing through Troy looking for treasure.

Maybe you can excavate the one in Bosnia: http://dino.avdibeg.dk/blog/2005/10/pyramid-found-in-heart-of-bosnia.html

I still say it's aliens causin' all them-there pyramids.

When I go to the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and see the Egyptian exhibit with its pyramid stuff, I like to say that my people built that, when we were slaves in Egypt.

More on the Bosnian pyramid, "Osmanagic...theory that the 2,120-foot hill...is actually a step pyramid...[and]...the structure itself is a colossal 722 feet high, or a third taller than Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza."

The Bosnian pyramid story is really exciting; I can't wait to find out what they uncover.
