I've never understood why colleges do things like that for athletes. Good teams may add a little prestige but it's not like they're profitable.

I've always felt the way the college leagues work makes a joke out of the colleges even as it glorifies the athletes. How does a university look if it has a great athlete, but that athlete structures his entire educational experience around playing sports, and is in fact sometimes compelled to either play the sport or leave his or her education behind because of scholarships.
In this case how does the university look when the public discovers that the "education" the student is recieving is such a sham that he requires the assistance of a faculty member to cover up the fact that he can't handle the minor weight of a few units in his graduate seminars, and needs them padded out for him. How pathetic.
Amanecer: I think the money involved can actually be quite substantial. I don't know the economics of it, but I think these high-profile sports are money-machines for universities.

A D-I school can earn well upwards of $100,000 on concessions alone at one football game. Basketball is at the very least half that for a similar school per game. There are lots of basketball games during a season.

If only Nava had filled out Form 2745.a: Request for Ability to Abuse Power, he wouldn't be in this mess.
