If nothing else, it demonstrates the regime change at Disney has altered a lot. I doubt he'd have been able to be so candid on the negative things in the past.

Dude, that guy is awesome. I am excited for Disney, because I feel the same way about it. I have numerous wonderful childhood memories tied to Disney movies, cartoons, characters, and audiotapes. And so I try to find old stuff to show my son, 7. Peter and the Wolf. Song of the South. Melody Time. All the old short cartoons that I intellectually know I only saw once or twice and yet feel like I had already seen them 800 times by the time I was 10.
No Pokemon. No DragonBall Z. No Yugioh. The old stuff, with some new- I love Ed, Edd, and Eddy, for exampl). (In that same vein, I also bought 5 Little Rascals DVDs- He loves them and gets them. Times had changed so much, but children get children having fun and getting into trouble.)

I am excited as well, I love Pixar movies, I just hope some that Disney does not just churn out comedy in the future, but still occasionally puts out movies with serious plots, with real villains, and real heroes.

I'm kind of hoping that they curtail their efforts to brand, comsumerize, and Brittney Spear-ize pre-teens, but that's not going to happen.

I nearly cried when I read this article. Nearly everything I currently dispise about Disney Animation was addressed. I'm so happy. I really hope this works out for Pixar.

Squick, I think brand and consumerize is a lost cause, but I still hold out hope that the Britney Spearization of preteens has hit critical mass. I got the impression from the article that Lassiter likes kids to be kids. And from the movies Pixar puts out, I think that's true. There's nothing in any of the Pixar movies I'd find even remotely objectionable. It's true family entertainment in the best sense of the word.
And I have to laugh at the ending of the article. I went to see Robots and The Wild with my kids and was bored silly. Beyond bored at The Wild. I actually got kinda mad because it was so stupid. My daughter got more interested in the lollipop I'd given her than the movie.

jeni, I'm trying to point out that while, yes, the declining quality of their movies and their "direct to video" sequels were annoying, the really bad thing (in my opinion) is the horrible things Disney does to kids and pre-teens through their television networks.

Since Lasseter is involved mainly in Disney's animation department, not the Disney Channel, ABC, or Radio Disney...I'm not sure what you expect he could do.

I'm not expecting anything. That's kind of the point.
In the long run, I'd much prefer that Disney's output be of low quality but they stop setting out to warp children's minds than the converse. However, healthy psyches have always been bad for business (that's just about the motto for the advertising industry), so I'm not holding my breath that this is going to change.

When we're talking about the revolutionary change that is going to fix things at Disney, I think it's important to note that this is in no way going to fix the more serious things that Disney does wrong.
Even if it weren't directly relevant, I think that noting, in threads about Disney, that they pursue business and content strategies that are damaging to children is worthy of mention.
