OMG!

Article. Non-Jovian planets where liquid water would remain stable, how utterly cool. It is almost certainly not human-habitable; at 18 times the Earth's mass it would have a surface gravity of 2.6g assuming the same density, which is probably not survivable in the long run. But this is not outside the bounds of possibility for actual life!

Can you imagine the pressure though? How deep could you go before you were crushed?

Hmmm, didn't think about that. I'm sure by the time we have technology to get there, they'll figure that out.

I just wish we were at the point where we could actually reliably identify earth-like planets around other stars. Finding Jupiters orbiting at Venus's distances are cool and all but not terribly useful in the whole "search for life" and possible colonization aspects.

though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, it's probably been a few years since I've looked into exactly what we've been able to notice with respect to smaller planets closer to earth's size and orbit.
