I'm finally starting my government job, and we had the union come in and make a presentation today. The AFGE had a good presentation, and they sold the union well.

What caught my eye was the dental program they offer. Apparently the FEHB program doesn't really pay for dental, and the plans you CAN get are cruddy.

With the union fees, the dental plan will cost me $500 a year. I have a one year committment, if I sign up.

I am thinking that I might pay my dues and get the insurance, because I need a good bit of dental work. I have cavities that need filling - at least 6, probably more. The 'copay' is quite low.

I know there are some CS people here - does anyone have any advice about the union or the dental plan? Is it worth my dues? Also, any thoughts on insurance plans (for a single male) that are part of the FEHB program are much appreciated.

Thats about $20 a pay check assuming 26 pay periods. Sounds like a good deal to me.

It does to me, also - which is why I'm wary. It sounds too good to be true.

What work do they cover in the first year, and what percentages of major and minor work are covered?

Also, you need to know about "customary" fees. There was no dentist within 50 miles that charged the allowed fee or less on my last dental plan, so 50% coverage worked out to about 35% coverage.

After I posted, I thought of the dobie possibilities. Heh.

Glad I read the thread first. I was about to post a "Civil Union Service" dobieoid (not really a dobie, but something like a dobie. Thus, Dobieoid)

And if we all posted our "thoughts of dobie possibilities" at once it would be a Double Duplex Dobieoid
