Guillmero del Toro wants to do a remake of Roald Dahl's The Witches for Warner Bros.

Now, while the original film did replace Dahl's bittersweet, subversive ending with a typical Hollywod mega-happy ending, so much of the rest of the film was right. The wonderful creature FX by the Jim Henson company. Angelica Huston as the extremely creepy Grand High Witch.

*sigh*

It makes me feel weird when they have radio stations that have "90's hour" the way they used to have "80's hour" or "oldies hour."

Gah.

Ha! Welcome to the Land of the Old.

There is no head witch like Angelica. How could they?

I've felt old ever since I realized how many pop stars are younger than me. [Wall Bash]

Also, I'm pretty sure my hair is thinning. [Angst]

EDIT - I've been thinking it'd be a good time to do a Big Friendly Giant movie. The technology's about ready.

I didn't know there was a Witches movie. That's the only book I remember reading in 6th grade.

I decided I was old today when the oldies station played my class's official graduation song.

Remember how effective the scene where Luke met his first Witch was?

Once he realized she had purple eyes, and he was all alone...

Yeah, the technology is ready, but I personally would hesitate to urge more Roald Dahl adaptations. It has been my experience that in the vast majority of those adaptations the filmmakers totally miss the part that makes Dahl one of THE top children's authors, whose stories can still be enjoyed and reread by more mature folks (here I am refering to, uh, me. I am 19, and very mature [Big Grin] )...Dahl's said it himself- he doesn't write down to kids.

The typical Hollywood kiddy film panders so completely to the imagined 5 year old to which they are marekting that it is painful to watch. The kid films that are watched over and over by kids AND parents and hell, a bunch of college students having a Classic Disney fest--those are the ones that may be simple, but don't simplify, and don't take away the danger/sadness of the story in the name of the 'G' rating.

Dang, now I really want to watch Beauty and the Beast.

Oh, just occured to me: You know who could make the BFG? Nick Park, brains behind Wallace & Gromit.

Don't be too sure. The trailer for "Flushed Away" made it seem that Aardman might have lost their way a tad.

Personally, I can't wait for the remake of The Goonies, with Jack Black playing the Anne Ramsey role. [Eek!]

(Just kidding. But you know it's only a matter of time.)

I'm mad now.

This is the death of entertainment. Why do we even bother making anything new, everything good has already been done, why don't we just remake old stuff? While we're at it, I've been thinking the bible has got a bit of an antiquated feel to it, let's rewrite it, or make it into a movie with Samuel L. Jackson as Jesus, and instead of Philistines, snakes.

We can rewrite all the old books and give them a more modern feel, and then remarket them to a new audience. Then maybe we can introduce some long awaited sequels, the Bible two, Jesus' revenge, with Samuel L. Jackson as Jesus, and instead of the people of Earth, snakes.

hehehehe

I'm going to go blow up Hollywood... if only it were real.

I just googled and watched the trailer, and not only do I take back the Nick Park-BFG idea, but I also have decided not to go to the movies again. Ever. I am going to just stay home and cuddle and sing along with the great children's movies of Disney's Menken era.

Excuse me please. I have to go and take my crappy trailer antidote (read: sing along really loudly with the "Aladdin" soundtrack, and proceed to "Lion King" if further treatment needed).

They do come up with more original ideas. But as long as people keep going to see remakes, why bother?

Admit it, you've probably seen a few of the remakes, haven't you? You've probably even enjoyed one or two of them.

If so, then it's your fault. [Wink]

Well, and mine I guess. I've watched a few as well.

I didn't know they'd done The Witches either. It was my second favorite Roald Dahl book after The BFG. I'll be sure to rent it as soon as I find the time.

Blasphemy!! I LOVE that movie. This news makes me feel the same as when I learned they're remaking The Omen. Basically: WHY?

I totally agree. The BFG was always my favourite and I would hate to see it Matilda-ized.

Other than Pam Ferris as Trunchbull, I feel the film version of Matilda wasn't all that great. Then again, the book isn't one of my favorite Dahl books to begin with, so I'm biased.

Not really. It was okay, but it wasn't the story I knew. I recognise the need for modification to stories when they go through the screen adaptation process but I felt that what they changed in Matilda was both unecessary and not very good.

I'd be very interested to know which changes you felt weren't true to the spirit of the book.

I love the movie "The Witches" !!! Why must they remake everything? Has all the creativeness dried up in the entire world? Seriously, just stop making movies if you can't come up with an original idea.

Re: Matilda. I wasn't too thrilled with that one either. Of course I never cared for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as an adaptation of the book CHARLIE and the Chocolate Factory. I enjoyed it as a goofy movie. Oompa loompa doompety doo, etc.

Remaking movies from the 90s makes me feel old too. It was only 7 years ago that it was 1999. My how time flies when you're in school and such. I'm done with school, now what????
