So* I got a letter from Hyundai, urging me to make an appointment for a 7500-mile checkup of my car. Never having owned a car before, I'm not sure if this is a good idea, or just their way of making a bit more money off me. What does Hatrack think?

It won't cost more than a couple of tanks of gas and if anything is out of calibration, it will save that much gas over a short time. Preventive maintanence is usually a good thing. I regret to say, however, I have never been able to convince my daughters of that.

Mazel Tov on owning your first car. Take good care of it and drive safely and it will take you far. Does this mean that things are looking better for you financially? No more grisly gristly sausages?

Well, the sausages are the reason I can afford the car. [Smile] No, actually, I'm pretty well off now, two incomes in the household and no children, and neither of us has expensive tastes.

I think the 7500 service is nothing more than a glorified oil and lube if I remember correctly, but it is good to get it done for what Artemisia Tridentata said.

If you want the car to last as long as possible in the best condition possible you should have all the milage services done when they are due.

You don't have to go to the dealer, but, especially early in your car's life, sticking to the recommended maintenance schedule has one very important function: it keeps your warranty valid.

Be on time with that stuff and keep records. Should you ever need to have warranty work done, the last thing you want is an argument over whether the problem was due to deferred maintenance.
