A little background before I pose the question. The last 2 months I've been eating clean and weightlifting 4 times a week (with some extra cardio thrown in). I've been tracking both my progress in the gym and my calories. I'm currently eating about 4000 calories a day-but clean calories. No fast food, ice cream, pizza, etc. A lot of chicken breast, whey protein, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, cottage cheese, etc.

My wife's been doing the same thing, except rather than bulking up she's trying to lost weight. So she eats about 1500 calories a day, but the same types of food and same types of gym excercises (with more emphasis on cardio). So yesterday my wife has a day off work and we decide to meet for lunch and have a 'cheat' meal. We went to Quiznos. The GM said that they didn't have any nutritional pamphlets but that the info is available on the website. So I get a Regular Black Angus steak sandwich, and my wife get's a small classic italian.

Later on the website, I can't find any nutritional info (except for 3 low carb/low cal subs). After a bit of Googling, I find that the company will not honor requests for nutrional information from customers. It will not return phone calls to the media about it.

I've decided not to go back there. I've gotten pretty picky about what I'll put into my body, and if they're so determined to keep it a secret, it makes me very concerned.

What about you? Will you eat at a fast food place that is unwilling to publish nutritional information on the food it serves? Is this even legal? I thought companies had to provide nutritional information for what they sell?

And finally, am I just weird that this bothers me enough not to go back?

If they told you it was available on the website and it isn't, that's a good enough reason for me not to go back, regardless of the fact that it would bug me that they won't release it.

I'd refuse to go back too....except I'm in love with the Honey Bacon Club there.

It's an addiction I'm trying to kick, but everytime I drive by, I can almost TASTE the honey french dressing they put on it.

Go to Subway instead. I love Quiznos, but have switched to Subway. It's easier to manage my portions with them.

My addiction I'm kicking is sodas. I'm in day 7 and miss it every time I eat out. But I'm learning who has the best tap water, so that's something. Next up for quitting will be chips. That's going to be harder.

Nope, I won't go to a place if they won't tell me what I'm eating. I can understand if a little hole in the wall type place doesn't have precise nutritional information available, but for a chain there's no excuse.

There was a restaurant in Yellow Springs, Ohio that I at at once--the Gypsy cafe. They didn't have a menu to order from; instead they just had two meal choices each day, which were whatever the cook had decided to prepare. What I had was really, really good, but I couldn't place the salad dresssing. I asked the server what it was, and he laughed and said it was a secret. I laughed too, and said "no, really, what is it?". He refused to tell me; said that it was the cook's secret recipe, and she wouldn't tell anyone. I said that I wasn't trying to get the recipe, but that I wanted to know what it was. The guy categorically refused to tell me. I decided then and there never to go back.

Seriously, what if I'd been allergic to something in the dressing? Refusing to reveal anything at all about it was just not okay, in my mind.

I have cut back on going to Quiznos for precisely that reason - I prefer knowing the nutritional information of what I'm eating.

Quizno's has always had this problem, and I have e-mailed and written to them about it.

I'm on low-carb, and they have a hand-out and "info" on their web site about carb content, but it is woefully inadequate. What it DOESN"T tell you is that those carb numbers are only if it is specifically on the low-carb bread, and without the sauces, etc. In others words, they give you a random number without any detail as to what that covers.

And they are doing away with their low-carb bread option (my local Quizno's manager tells me).

This is the only fast-food place I have found to be so lacking in nutritional information, as I always look everything up.

However, I do NOT take it out on the local franchisee/manager, as he has little control over it. Either I can choose to work within the parameters I know (have a Quizno's salad) or full-blown cheat. But the local guy's trying to make a living and can't get the corporate level to realize this is important.

Some estimates at online calorie counting sites were about 1000 calories for a small sub.
I'm figuring regular Black Angus steak, about ~2000 calories. For me (although my wife's situation is different) I don't care about the fact that something has a lot of calories- in fact I prefer it. What I do care about is that it doesn't have a lot of saturated fats, sugars, etc. Lots of protein & complex carbs are perfect. But they won't tell me. I figure it's got to be so bad compared to Subway that they're scared it'll drive people away.

Well, I have to eat some of my words here.

The original information on their site that I complained to them about several months ago (carb numbers without specifics) has actually been changed! to specify that it is only with low-carb bread, with dressing on the side, small sandwich, and if prepared exactly as show on menu (adding or deleting items by your request changes that). None of that was on there before

(see the link that says "view low carbohydrate information" at the bottom of that page)

Maybe if enough of us make a noise, they will begin to give us more of what we demand in information.

If the best that Quizno's can say is that zombie rats like their food, it's pretty obvious to Quizno management that ya really don't even wanna know what the ingredients are.

I've never had Quizno's, and now seeing this thread I'm kind of glad. I'll admit that the spongmonkeys were definitely a deterrent, but I had no real interest even before they launched that commercial.

Two questions:

Why in the name of all that is holy would anyone eat 4000 calories a day on purpose? Yikes. That's a lot of food. I'm a fat chick, but if I tried to eat that much food, I'd be soooooo sick.

Why would anyone eat at Quiznos? They toast their sandwich bread. That is, IMHO, blasphemous.

When I was being very active, I had to eat 4000 calories a day to maintain my underweight weight.

When my brother was on a college track team, he had to eat 5500 to maintain his weight.

You eat what you need to live the lifestyle you want to live. An active adult man can burn a LOT of calories.

Depending on how active you are during the day, this is not much at all. During judo season when I was in highschool, I was eating 7-8k a day, and I was LOSING weight.

I guess. I just cannot imagine eating that much food per day, especially when not eating any of the high fat/high calorie stuff that doesn't amount to much mass.

I'm with kq. I loved the spongemonkey commercials and still sing them whenever I pass Quiznos <They have a pepper barrrrr!>

I've only eaten there once or twice, and wasn't impressed. They're a lot more expensive than Subway or the family owned sandwich shop I frequent and are no tastier.

I go to Quizno's because their sandwiches are toasted. It's much better tasting than both Subway and Togo's, and I consider the Subway sandwiches that I've had the worst sandwiches ever. They're tasteless and not filling at all.

I really, really, really doubt this is accurate, given that a double quarter pounder with cheese from McDonald's has only 730.

What always squicks me out is the calorie & fat info on frappucinos from Starbucks, and how much of a difference whipped cream makes (a tall mocha frap, no whip, has 410 calories. With whip, 540).

A 50 calorie difference makes perfect sense for regular whipped cream.

Then you have to balance the yumminess of the whipped cream with the extra 50 calories. 50 calories isn't all THAT much, as long as you don't add 50 calories to EVERYTHING you eat.

But I don't think I'd like whipped cream on my turkey sandwiches.

If I remember my weight watchers rules correctly it is 50 calories per pts so a 8pt item would be 8*50 or 400 calories. I maybe be off on this though!

But, yeah, 50 calories wouldn't be a big deal for whipped cream. 130 kinda is. Especially since I don't think it adds anything to the drink. I always tell them to hold the whip.

It's hard to be honest. Especially when it's all healthy foods, not 'empty calories.' 4000 calories is a lot of chicken breasts and oatmeal [Wink]

The reason why is I'm trying to gain muscle mass. I'm 6'3, 200 lbs at about 15% body fat. Ideally I'd like to be about 10 pounds heavier at 10% body fat. That's a gain of 22 lbs of muscle. That's a lot of meat to put on.

To do this, I eat 6 times a day, trying to hit 4000 total calories right now. The reason I do this is that the body will eat it's own muscles before using fat cells. (That is why starvation diets don't work well at all-or by the time they do work for you, then you're probably well on your way to an eating disorder and slowly killing yourself). So I won't see very fast strength gains in the gym if my muscles can't rebuild after each day. And the only way they can rebuild stronger and bigger than what they were before is if I have a lot of protein and surplus of calories. I don't do much cardio anymore (maybe an hour a week now) simply because I was not gaining weight.

So yeah, it's a lot of food. But my whole beef with Quiznos (pardon the pun) is that I don't know what I'm eating. Someone mentioned the double quarter pounder at McDonalds. A regular Black Angus steak sandwich is almost 3 times the weight of that burger. It's not necessarily the ~12 oz of roast beef or the slices of cheese that worry me. It's what's in the bread, and the two delicious delicious sauces that they put on there than concern me. Sauces that rich can be around 100 calories a tablespoon, almost all of it in saturated and trans fats and sugars.

I have always had to eat about 4500 calories a day to maintain my weight. When nursing, I can eat more than that and still lose weight.

I'm not sure. It is a calorie-fiber-fat ratio of some sort. The higher the fiber content and lower the fat content, the more of a higher calorie food you can eat. And vegetables(nonstarchy) are "free."

What adds up quickly is (sad sniffle) cheese. Three points for one slice. So, on a 1/4 pounder with cheese, that is 6 points just in cheese alone.
