We believe that the leadership of our church are called as prophets. You probably knew that. But lesser known are the titles of "revelator" and "seer".

In the Book of Mormon, Ammon said that a seer is a revelator and a prophet also. The definition of a seer is "a person authorized of God to see things which God has hidden from the world"; in the Book of Mormon, it specifically relates to being able to use the Urim and Thummim, which are translators, and which Joseph Smith also used. But nowadays, while it still carries that power, it might mean other things, too; seeing the world in a different light than the rest of us, perhaps, discerning the meaning of hidden things. Prophecy refers specifically to words or writings which are given by God through the Holy Ghost. We believe that revelation is given to all people who have the Holy Ghost with them, but that revelation can only be given to an individual for himself or a person, position, or people that he holds authority over. Since these men hold authority over the whole Church, they are "revelators" for the whole church (as well as their families and themselves.)

If you have any questions or I have not explained something, please ask! [Smile] I hope this was helpful and edifying.

Very interesting, ketchupqueen! Thanks for taking the time to post that. No questions right this second, but that's at least partly because I'm pretty swamped at work right now. I may have some this evening when I have a chance to think about it more.

I don't think that my religion has anything comparable. Thanks for sharing the information. I'm always happy to learn.

Yes Sister ketchupqueen, I am LDS.

Sometimes when I try to be tongue-in-cheek I end up with my foot in there as well. [Embarrassed]

You were right in asking me to change the thread title. (Although, I’m still not completely happy with the new one. I’m not going to change it again, though. But it would be amusing to see other folks’ ideas of an ideal title. [Smile] ) Anyway, now that I’ve had a day to think it through I see that you are right. I guess I did kind of skate along the edge of irreverence. I meant no disrespect toward the sacred callings of our leaders, but still there are some things with which I shouldn‘t be playing word games. Thank you for your gentle reminder of that.

By the way, you wrote a good explanation of those terms. I can’t think of anything to add.

Sam, I thought I was being a little picky to ask, but I'm glad you didn't have a problem changing it. Sorry I ruined your title. Since I found it a little unsettling to keep reading that, and since there are many much more polite people on this board who might feel the same way and be too polite to say anything since you obviously weren't being purposefully irreverent, I figured that I would speak up. I'm glad there are no hard feelings, I didn't want to make you feel bad!
