Short Version: Does anyone have any news regarding whether or not Palm is going to release a GSM/Cingular-compatible Treo 700p? Is anyone else as frustrated as I am that this device not only does not yet exist, but is also not confirmed/denied to be in development?!

Long Version: So here I am, a Cingular customer, waiting for Palm/Access to get off of their collective butts and make me a Palm 700p that is compatible with GSM networks. I'd switch to Verizon, but they don't offer the same rates that I'm getting with Cingular, and besides, I like the whole idea of a SIM card for my phone.

A little back story. I've been waiting on buying a smartphone for a while, since I've long carried a Palm Pilot in one pocket with the cell phone in the other. I want to get one that uses the Palm operating system, since I have invested time and money into finding third-party software for my handheld, and all of that would go to waste with another OS. Meanwhile, the Treo 650 (which works for GSM, I might add) is reputed to be rather unstable, and, I might add, is something like 3 years old.

Imagine my delight when I discover that Palm has developed a NEW model Treo, the 700, and it is designed to operate under their proprietary OS! It's packed with nifty features, is much more stable, has more memory, and connects to the internet at faster (almost broadband) speeds!

Now imagine my dismay when I discover that this nifty new technological wonder is only available on Sprint and Verizon networks!

Ah well, I thought. I can wait to upgrade. No problem. In the meantime, I'll live with toting around two electronic devices until such time as Palm releases a Cingular-compatible device. Alas! Due to a dumb prank played on me by an acquaitance, my Palm Pilot screen has cracked! Now I have no palm pilot, and nothing to upgrade it to, once said acquaintance gives me the money he now owes me!

In the meantime, news regarding any upcoming release of a GSM/Cingular-compatible Treo is slow to leak. Many net bloggers agree that it is likely the thing will appear sometime soon, but there seem to be equal numbers of bloggers out there who deny that such a device is in the works. Why, oh why, can't Palm confirm/deny whether they are working on such a project?

Your commisseration will be welcomed.
Your ridicule will be borne.
Your information will be heeded.

It will be a while. They took forever before they offered the 650. I got a refurbished Siemens SX66 for only $50 just 2 weeks ago from Cingular. It does everything I could hope for with the price. All I did was get a 2gig SD card off of ebay for mp3s. It even has a wireless internet receiver so I can get online, without going through Cingular.
