I've read Lost Boys (by OSC, of course!) several times, and every single time I bawl huge, wet, painful sobs at the end. I know it's because I get so emotionally involved with the characters that, even though I know how it'll end, I'm still shocked and devastated. I know I'm not alone.

My question, for those of you who empathize with the Fletchers as I do, is: are there other books that make you feel this way? Other authors who's characters become so real? Other stories that touch your heart like this one does?

<~ still wiping away tears from the latest reread

The novel didn't hit me as hard as the original story. Possibly because in the original story, he wrote it as autobiography.

For which he caught a lot of flak. It's not surprising he toned down that aspect in the novel.

Haven't read the book in question, but your question brings to mind one of my own favourites.
Every time I read Silverthorn (by R.E. Feist) tears come to my eyes, when I come to the scene where one of the main characters has just died. A young and impressionable lad who had become close to the protagonist, breaks into tears at the sight of such a cruel fate.
Even knowing how the story continues, this particular scene moves me every time.

Jimmy was my favorite character, I think. At least when he was still a kid.
