Samuel L. Jackson wants me to see his new movie. He told me so, in a recent phone call. There was even an implication of violence ensuing were I not to follow his reasoned advice.
"You don't wanna mess with me on this one, because I WILL come after you!" he said.
After I hung up I did not cry, change pants, or call my lawyer and demand police protection from the popular ex-Jedi. Instead I went online to gleefully send personalized Samuel L. Jackson threats to all of my friends and co-workers, and therein lies the magic of "Snakes on a Plane."

The timing of this movie has been unfortunate for my life (or the timing of my life.) There is a humongous black rat snake living at least part time in my dryer vent. I have yet to solve this problem, although I've done a lot of TALKING about it. This hasn't made the snake go anywhere.
However, people have decided that it's very very very amusing to point at me or the dryer vent and say, "Dude! Snakes in the dryer vent!" a bajillion times. I become more and more inclined to let the snake at them.

Now that I've finally seen something resembling a plot blurb for SoaP, I might actually watch it someday. As the subject of a viral marketing scheme, authorized or not, I had no interest at all.
And yes, Jules is soooooooooo going to get you... how does that line go? "The path of the righteous is beset on all side by SNAKES!!!"

Don't worry though, it's not boring. It's not too bad, and it's definitely not too good. It's perfect for what it was trying to be though. Totally implausible. But that's not what matters. What matters is that the plot took a back seat while the snakes took over the plane. Bites and swelling and blood and suggestiveness was what the meager action movie was all about.
And hell, I laughed the whole way through. It didn't matter if I was laughing at the absurdity of a scenario, or because something intentionally funny was created; the movie was meant to be entertaining, and that it was.

Fan schmans. Both Samuel L. Jacksom and the writer of the original internet blog post that helped start the tidal wave of the internet meme this became were working for New Line. Of course they would try to make it seem cool and fun. Without such a big star and such a catchy initial blog post, this whole thing would be just another generic summer action flick. I don't think this was planned. I think they most certainly capitalized big time on the buzz once it appeared, but as many other movie and TV shows have discovered you can't create fan buzz or viral marketing. It just happens (or doesn't).

Over here, we're debating whether to see the movie, and whether to wait until it comes to a theater where we can see it with large numbers of friends and alcohol.

Got back from seeing it a couple hours ago. Believe it or not, there was a midnight showing of the movie around here.
It was hysterically funny at points. 60% of the movie left me cringing in my seat.
But by far the best thing in this movie, was the reactions from the crowd. There were maybe a hundred people in our theater, and everytime someone got bit, or died, or something crazy happened, or Sam Jackson swore, the whole place went nuts with cheers or gasps. Best audience reaction to a movie that I have ever seen in my entire life. It was worth seeing.
(spoiler)Anyone who has seen RotK: EE (Extended Edition). Remember the part when Saruman falls off the top of Orthanc and lands on the spike? Remember the mental or verbal "Oh!!!" that must have followed when you saw that? Snakes on a Plane is that, times 100, throughout the entire movie. (/spoiler)
