Have any of you seen New York Doll? It's an indie film about Arthur "Killer" Kane, a member of the 70s glam/punk rock band "The New York Dolls."
It's a really bittersweet story. The guy wasted his mind on drugs, spent 30 years pining over lost glory, ended up in L.A. on welfare where he'd hocked his guitars, joined the Mormon Church and became a family history center worker ("I've been demoted from famous rock star to shlep on a bus" he said of his ride to and from "work" every day) and then had a chance to reunite with his band in London for a festival hosted by Morrissey, a Dolls fan from his youth.
It was a hit at Sundance last year, I think. Anyway, I just rented it on Netflix and was really touched by it. Arthur is kinda pathetic but has this sweet soul--it's just a quirky, touching story. And I won't spoil the ending. I enjoyed the bonus bits, although the Morrissey interview dragged on a bit long for my taste--he certainly lived up to his "melancholy" label.

spoilers be damned, whats this "Nobody could have imagined what would happen next" bit in the movie synopsis after Arthur gets back from the reunion concert?

I saw that a few months ago, and I loved it. It's a short story of a movie, and it embodies the best of best stories. It has an arc, fabulous characters, pathos, a little bathos, and it was the perfect length.
The elderly ladies at the library being thrilled to work with a rock star was one of the funniest, cutest things I've ever seen. The interviewer suggested that they were groupies, and they giggled and nodded. I thought, "They have NO IDEA what a groupie is.", but it was incredibly cute.

Well, if anyone answers BlackBlade's question I sure hope you put a big fat "Spoiler Warning" with enough space to let readers ignore it if they want! I for one would not have wanted to know the answer to that before I saw it, so I'll just keep mum.

Best part of the whole documentary was the Dolls' lead singer singing 'Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief' at the end.

I saw "New York Doll" in San Francisco with a few Mormons and a bunch of punk fans. It was very cool.
Greg Whiteley was there and took questions from the audience. I think it was an incongruous moment for some of the punks -- here was this Mormon kid talking about the Clash.
